There Is No “Good” Witchcraft: Why White Magic Is Spiritually Dangerous
By Doreen Virtue| Contending for the Word Q&A |
Show Summary
Is “white magic” harmless? Many people today claim there is a “good” or “benevolent” form of witchcraft—spells “for healing,” manifestations “for peace,” or spiritual techniques “that do no harm.” But Scripture never presents witchcraft as morally neutral or redeemable.
In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Doreen Virtue explains why so-called white magic is spiritually dangerous in the same way as overt forms of witchcraft, why God condemns all forms of conjuring, and why Christians must stay far from attempts to rebrand the occult as harmless, aesthetic, or “Christian.”

Key Scriptures
- Deuteronomy 18:9–14 — God forbids occult practices.
- Galatians 5:19–21 — Witchcraft listed among works of the flesh; those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
- 1 Corinthians 8–10 — Christian liberty does not redeem pagan worship; love guards the weaker brother.
- Hebrews 13:8 — Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Episode Highlights
- Why “white magic” is a cultural rebrand, not a biblical category.
- Why God’s condemnation of witchcraft does not include exceptions for “good intentions.”
- How 1 Corinthians 8–10 is often misused to excuse pagan practices.
- Why “Christian witch” language is spiritually destructive and doctrinally impossible.
- Why Jesus never used occult methods—and why His power needs no “tools” or techniques.
- How pop culture normalizes the idea of a “good witch,” and why Christians must resist that catechesis.
Episode Notes
1) The Myth of “Benevolent” Witchcraft
The world often markets witchcraft as harmless, therapeutic, and morally “clean”—as long as it claims “no harm.” But Scripture does not define
right and wrong by intention alone. God’s Word condemns the practice itself. What God has forbidden cannot be made righteous by rebranding.
2) God Condemns Witchcraft—Old and New Testament
From the Law and the Prophets to the New Testament, the Bible speaks with clarity: occult practices are not spiritual shortcuts to “help,”
but spiritual counterfeits that oppose the Lord. “White” and “dark” magic are categories invented by culture—not categories established by God.
3) Can Pagan Practices Be “Redeemed”? (A Clear Word from 1 Corinthians 8–10)
Some attempt to justify “redeeming” occult practices by appealing to Christian liberty. But Paul never teaches that pagan worship can be redeemed.
His concern is love, holiness, and not participating in idolatry—while also guarding the conscience of weaker believers.
4) The Tragedy of “Christian Witches”
It is heartbreaking to see people claim the name of Christ while adopting occult identity and practices. Witchcraft is not an add-on to discipleship.
It is a rival spirituality. The gospel calls sinners out of darkness into the light of Christ—not into a rebranded form of the same darkness.
5) Jesus Needs No Methods
Jesus is not a miracle-worker who borrowed techniques. He is God the Son. His authority is intrinsic, sovereign, and holy. Any claim that Jesus used
spells, rituals, or New Age methods is a denial of His person and a distortion of His work.
6) A Call: Turn from Control to Trust
Much of “white magic” is about control—trying to bend outcomes through spiritual techniques. Scripture calls believers to pray, to trust, and to obey,
resting in God’s providence and goodness. True help is found in Christ, not in conjuring.
Takeaways & Reflection Questions
- Where do you see “white magic” being normalized in media, social platforms, or everyday products?
- Have you ever been tempted to justify spiritual practices by saying, “My intentions are good”?
- How does Scripture reshape the way you think about spiritual “tools” versus trusting the Lord in prayer?
- What safeguards help you stay grounded in God’s Word when deception looks “friendly” or “aesthetic”?
