Is the Bible true? Does it ever err? And does its morality still matter? Many Christians ask these questions in a sincere effort to grow in their faith. Still, others, armed with common claims of biblical contradictions, scientific inaccuracies, and outdated sexual morality, do so out of sheer unbelief. Despite these questions being sufficiently answered on numerous occasions, still, they persist.

The authority of the Bible matters. The rich tradition of biblical teaching throughout the Church has already responded to the issues and challenges of our day. We do not need to make up answers, for we have them in the rich tradition of Christian theology. In The Word Matters, Dave Jenkins take readers by the hand and helps them understand how serious the issue of biblical authority is and how the Bible is under attack so that they can stand with confidence on the Word of God.

“My friend Dave Jenkins has written a solid book on biblical authority.”
John Frame

“Dave Jenkins clearly shows that the foundation of Christianity is the authority of God’s Word, the inspired and inerrant Scriptures, and if we build our lives on this bedrock, we will never be shaken.”
Joel R. Beeke

What others are saying:

“Many Christians are operating under a faulty understanding of what the Bible is and the role it plays in our life. The Word Matters is a robust yet accessible primer for every Christian to deepen their understanding of infallibility and inerrancy and biblical inspiration and authority. It also serves as a crash course in the importance of biblical doctrine as it touches everything from our salvation and sanctification to our relationships with others. This is a great book to hand to a new Christian, but it is also a good reminder to every Christian of the value and beauty of biblical authority.”

“The Word Matters by Dave Jenkins is written with the breadth of a historian, the precision of a theologian, the perspective of a worldview scholar, and the clarity of an author who writes to serve his readers. Jenkins asserts that the Bible matters, and he provides reasons that back up his claim. Throughout, the thoughtful reader will learn how to think biblically and skillfully employ the Bible in the face of non-Christian philosophies. A trustworthy Bible means that there is a foundation for true, life-giving hope. I commend this book to you!”

Martyn Lloyd-Jones stated in referring to the Christian, “He is a man of one book; he starts with it; he submits himself to it; this is his authority.” The Word of God is truth, and it is our standard and definition of truth. In his most excellent, informative read, The Word Matters, Dave Jenkins lays out for us the importance of why we need to have a correct theological understanding of the doctrine of Scripture. When we grasp what terms like inerrancy, infallibility, and inspiration mean, it equips us to live out our daily lives in a way that honors the Lord. I’m grateful how Dave walked us through these terms and so many more issues and challenges we face as believers as we find ourselves in a world where the Bible is under attack. The Word Matters is a helpful, practical read that gives us a clear picture of what it looks like when God’s Word is your authority for all of life. My favorite reminder he gives us is “Doctrine is not only to be believed; it should adorn our lives.”

“We live in a world where compromise is king and personal liberty is regarded as a cherished right. Indeed, many are doing what is right in their own eyes (Judg. 21:25). The Word Matters by Dave Jenkins takes a radically different approach. With the mind of a seasoned theologian and the heart of a caring pastor, Jenkins urges readers to submit themselves to Scripture. The result is a worshiper who is fully surrendered to God. Jenkins’s fine work raises the bar of biblical authority by examining the critical doctrines of inspiration, inerrancy, and infallibility. Additionally, he militates against the diabolical dogma of theological liberalism and exposes the underbelly of this pernicious system. In the end, The Word Matters challenges readers to cling to the timeless truth that resides in God’s Word. Rather than compromise the truth, Jenkins calls readers to accept it wholeheartedly, unreservedly, and joyfully!”

“The Word of God does matter—most professing Christians would claim to believe this. Unfortunately, far fewer can tell you why, as the doctrine of Scripture is rarely taught in today’s churches. This has led to a myriad of laymen within the church without a basic understanding of God’s Word. What Dave has done in this book provides an intellectually stimulating primer while simultaneously infusing an easily understandable explanation with scriptural, personal, and historical illustrations. This is one of my favorite aspects of his writing; he seamlessly blends church history when giving examples while still providing copious amounts of biblical verses. It connects the topic at hand with saints that came before us, which makes it feel as though we are learning doctrine alongside them. While expounding on the doctrine of Scripture, this book also shows why this doctrine is so very important. Once again, Dave has done a fantastic job clarifying the theological implications of ignoring or misunderstanding important doctrinal beliefs. This primer is absolutely perfect for believers, new or old, who want to deepen their understanding of the doctrine of Scripture.”

“Every generation has had to affirm and defend the truth and authority of the Bible, the Word of God. In our day, we need more and not fewer, efforts to respond to objections to the Bible and to help believers understand the inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture. For this reason, we may be grateful for Dave Jenkins’s accessible and personal survey of the doctrine of Scripture, and for his helping readers to see the practical implications of this doctrine for Christian living.”

“It seems trivial. It seems incidental. Was there a real, historical Adam and Eve? Did humankind really seek to build a tower of Babel to reach the heavens in defiance of God? Was there a worldwide flood? If so, was there a Noah and his wife, three sons, and their wives who formed a veritable seed pod for a second burst of life on the earth? Can’t we just say we believe in Jesus and not have to go into all these stories from ancient days?

To the latter question, absolutely. There is a vital connection between the history, wisdom, narratives, and prophecies of the Old Testament and the person of Jesus Christ in your salvation. To the former questions, of course we must believe in the historical account of creation, the fall, the disobedience of mankind that led to worldwide catastrophe, rebirth, and a population migration across the earth that resulted from God’s disbursement of peoples at the tower of Babel.

One of the rising young lights in biblical studies and in equipping the saints for ministry through solid, biblical, well-researched, and gifted writing is David Jenkins. In his latest book, The Word Matters, Jenkins establishes the strong foundation of Scripture and its relationship to faith in Jesus Christ and to our lives as believers. In a word, Dave Jenkins shows us that if we are unable to believe in the supernatural creation of the earth as chronicled in the book of Genesis, how can we believe in a Savior who is fully God and fully man, born of a virgin, who lived the life we couldn’t live and died the death that should have been ours? How can we believe in the resurrection if we do not believe in the historical account of the flood? How do we believe in the ascension of Jesus if we do not believe in the story of Noah? In other words, David Jenkins demonstrates the necessity of faith in the whole Bible. Each part of the Scriptures is related to other parts.

Years ago, my late friend, the Rev. Dr. James Montgomery Boice (1938–2000), wrote a book in defense of the Word of God, Standing on the Rock. Dr. Boice invested years of his life in defending the inerrancy and the infallibility of the Word of God. His arguments, so rich in the Bible’s own testimony of itself, as well as his unsurpassed scholarship, demonstrated that the Bible is not only true but is sufficient for all questions of faith and life. Dr. Boice was a great man in his generation. But the wounded serpent is forever rising in painful hatred at God and the people of God that each new generation must take its stand. I believe God raised up my friend David Jenkins to be an important young voice in this same battle for the truthfulness and sufficiency of the Word of God.

I have personally benefited from Dave’s writing. I know of his burden for the people of God to know their Bibles and to recognize that Christian faith is inextricably linked to the high view of holy Scripture. Therefore, I commend this volume to you and to the church of our God and Savior Jesus Christ. Now more than ever, we need pastoral centurions to stand up on this rock. Whenever I read Dave Jenkins’s work, my soul is revived. There is hope. For there are others who are now taking their stand upon this rock. May the Lord use this book to strengthen his people to receive and to go forward on the inerrant and infallible Word of the living God.”
