When Fear Rises: Trusting God in the Midst of Fear (Psalm 56)
Show: Reading the Bible Daily with Dave
Host: Dave Jenkins
Date: April 5, 2026
Show Summary
Psalm 56 is a psalm of trust written in the midst of fear, not after it has passed. David writes while surrounded by enemies, vulnerable, misunderstood, and under pressure. Yet instead of allowing fear to have the final word, he anchors his soul in the promises and faithfulness of God.
In this episode of Reading the Bible Daily with Dave, Dave Jenkins explains how Psalm 56 teaches believers to bring their fears honestly before the Lord, to trust His Word in the middle of anxiety, and to rest in the personal care of God, who sees every tear and sustains His people by grace.

Episode Notes
Psalm 56 teaches us how to trust God when fear rises. David does not deny danger or pretend that anxiety is not real. Instead, he brings his fear honestly before the Lord and chooses to trust God’s Word in the midst of opposition and uncertainty.
1. Honest Fear in the Presence of God (Psalm 56:1–2)
David begins with a plea for grace. He does not minimize his suffering or act as though everything is fine. He speaks honestly about being trampled, oppressed, and surrounded. Faith begins with honesty before God. The Lord invites His people to bring their fear to Him, not hide it behind religious language or outward strength.
2. Choosing Trust When Fear Arises (Psalm 56:3–4)
These verses form the heart of the psalm: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” David does not say if he is afraid, but when. Fear is real, but it does not have to rule. David anchors his trust in the Word of God, not in changing circumstances. Trust is not the absence of fear. It is the decision to rely on God in the presence of fear.
3. Surrounded but Not Abandoned (Psalm 56:5–7)
David describes relentless opposition. His enemies twist his words, watch his steps, and pursue him with malice. The pressure is constant and personal. Yet David entrusts justice to God rather than taking vengeance into his own hands. God’s people may be watched, opposed, and misunderstood, but they are never abandoned by the Lord.
4. God Knows Every Tear (Psalm 56:8–9)
These verses contain one of the most tender truths in the Psalms. God keeps count of David’s tossing and puts his tears in His bottle. This is a picture of God’s personal and intimate care for His people. He is not distant from our pain. He knows sleepless nights, anxious thoughts, and quiet tears. Not one sorrow escapes His notice.
5. Reaffirmed Confidence in God’s Word (Psalm 56:10–11)
David repeats his declaration of trust with deepened conviction. Fear is confronted by truth. The psalmist asks, “What can man do to me?” because he has fixed his eyes on the Lord. Rehearsing God’s promises strengthens faith and quiets fear.
6. Gratitude and Forward Hope (Psalm 56:12–13)
The psalm ends with thanksgiving. David speaks of deliverance, worship, and walking before God in the light of life. Gratitude flows from trust in God’s saving work.
Psalm 56 and Christ
Psalm 56 ultimately points us to Jesus Christ. He was surrounded by enemies, falsely accused, and opposed at every turn. Yet He entrusted Himself fully to the Father and walked through suffering without sin. Because Christ has overcome, believers can trust God even when fear presses in.
