What Jesus Is Doing Right Now: The Ongoing Work of the Risen Christ

By Dave Jenkins

Easter has passed. The songs have been sung. The empty tomb has been proclaimed. And yet, for many Christians, the resurrection can quietly drift into the past, as if it were something to celebrate, affirm, and then move on from.

But the resurrection of Jesus Christ is not merely an event to remember. It is a reality that continues.

Too often, we think of Jesus in past tense. He lived. He died. He rose. All of that is gloriously true. But Scripture does not leave Christ in the past. It presents Him as living, reigning, interceding, and working even now.

The risen Christ is not absent. He is active.

So what is Jesus doing right now? The Bible gives us a clear and comforting answer. At this very moment, the risen Christ is reigning over all things, interceding for His people, building His Church, and sanctifying those He has redeemed. And that truth is not abstract theology. It is the foundation for how we live, endure, and hope.

The Risen Christ Is Reigning

After His resurrection and ascension, Jesus was seated at the right hand of the Father. As Ephesians 1:20–22 declares, God “raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion… and he put all things under his feet.”

This is not symbolic language. It is a declaration of present authority.

Jesus is not waiting to reign. He is reigning now.

In a world that often feels unstable, chaotic, and uncertain, this truth anchors the believer. Christ is not reacting to events as they unfold. He is sovereign over them. Kings rise and fall, cultures shift, and circumstances change, but the authority of Christ remains absolute and unchallenged.

The risen Christ is not passive. He reigns with all authority.

For the Christian, this means we do not live in fear of the unknown. We live under the rule of the One who knows all things and governs all things for His glory and our good.

The Risen Christ Is Interceding

Not only does Christ reign, He also intercedes.

Hebrews 7:25 tells us that Jesus “always lives to make intercession” for those who draw near to God through Him. Romans 8:34 echoes this truth: Christ Jesus “is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”

This means that right now, the risen Christ is actively representing His people before the Father.

He is not distant. He is not indifferent. He is not silent.

He knows our weaknesses. He sees our struggles. He is aware of every burden, every temptation, every sorrow. And in His perfect righteousness, He continually pleads on behalf of His people.

The risen Christ is not silent. He intercedes for His people.

What comfort this brings. When our prayers feel weak, Christ’s intercession is perfect. When our faith feels small, His advocacy is sufficient. Our hope does not rest in the strength of our devotion, but in the faithfulness of our Savior.

The Risen Christ Is Building His Church

Jesus Himself declared, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).

That promise did not expire with the resurrection. It continues today.

The growth, strength, and perseverance of the Church are not ultimately dependent on human effort, strategy, or creativity. They rest on Christ Himself. He raises up leaders, equips His people, and sustains His Church through His Word and Spirit.

Even when the Church appears weak, even when opposition rises, even when progress seems slow, Christ is at work.

The risen Christ is not distant. He is actively building His Church.

This truth brings both humility and confidence. Humility, because the work is not ours to accomplish in our own strength. Confidence, because the outcome does not depend on us. Christ will build His Church, and nothing will overcome it.

The Risen Christ Is Sanctifying His People

The work of Christ does not stop at saving His people. He is also committed to transforming them.

Philippians 1:6 reminds us that “he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” The Christian life is not a self-improvement project. It is the ongoing work of Christ in the life of the believer.

Through His Word and by His Spirit, Christ is conforming His people to His image. He is producing holiness, shaping desires, renewing minds, and strengthening faith.

This work is often slow. It is sometimes difficult. But it is real.

The risen Christ is not finished. He is transforming His people.

For the believer who feels discouraged in the fight against sin, this truth is a source of deep encouragement. You are not left to change yourself. Christ is at work in you, even when progress feels unseen.

Living in Light of the Risen Christ

When we bring these truths together, the picture becomes clear.

Because Christ is reigning, we can rest in His sovereignty.
Because Christ is interceding, we can trust in His care.
Because Christ is building His Church, we can labor with hope.
Because Christ is sanctifying His people, we can pursue holiness with confidence.

The Christian life is not lived alone. It is lived under the active care of the risen Christ.

This reshapes how we face trials, how we approach prayer, how we serve in the Church, and how we fight sin. Everything changes when we remember that Jesus is not merely the Savior who was, but the Savior who is.

Conclusion

The resurrection is not just something we believe. It is the reality we are living in.

Jesus Christ is alive. And right now, He is reigning, interceding, building, and transforming.

Christian, you are not walking through this life on your own. You are held, helped, and sustained by the risen Christ.

Stand firm in Him. Trust Him. Follow Him.

He is not finished.
