Why is the cross central to the Christian faith?

The cross is central because it is where God’s justice and mercy meet. At Calvary, Jesus bore the penalty for our sin, satisfied God’s righteous wrath, and secured forgiveness and reconciliation for all who repent and believe.

What does it mean that Christ is our substitute?

Christ as our substitute means He stood in our place, bearing the punishment we deserved for our sin. This is often called the great exchange: our sin was placed on Him and His righteousness is credited to all who trust in Him.
