All right, everybody, welcome back to Reading the Bible Daily with Dave. I’m your host, Dave Jenkins, and today is Saturday, April 4, 2026.
Psalm 55 is a raw and deeply personal lament. David is overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, and heartbreak, not only because of external threats, but because of betrayal by a trusted companion.
This psalm reminds us that God invites us to bring our burdens honestly before Him and rest in His sustaining grace.
1. A Soul Overwhelmed by Fear (vv. 1–8)
David opens with urgency and honesty. His heart is restless. Fear and anguish overwhelm him. Yet instead of hiding, he brings his distress to God in prayer.
2. A City Marked by Sin (vv. 9–11)
David describes a culture filled with violence, fraud, and corruption. God’s people are often grieved not only by personal suffering, but by the moral decay around them.
3. The Pain of Betrayal (vv. 12–15, 20–21)
The deepest wound comes not from enemies, but from a close companion. Betrayal cuts deeply because it violates trust, fellowship, and shared faith.
4. Persistent Prayer (vv. 16–19)
David continues in prayer, morning, noon, and night. Faith is not silence in suffering, but persistence in bringing our burdens to the Lord.
5. Cast Your Burden on the Lord (v. 22)
This is the heart of the psalm. God does not promise the absence of suffering, but He promises to sustain His people.
6. Trust in God’s Justice (v. 23)
David entrusts judgment to God. The righteous are called not to revenge, but to rest in God’s justice and sovereignty.
Christ Connection
Psalm 55 ultimately points to Jesus Christ. He was betrayed by a close companion, surrounded by deceit, and yet entrusted Himself fully to the Father. Because Christ bore our greatest burden, we can cast every lesser burden on Him.
