Law and Justice Under God: A Biblical Worldview

Everyone cares about justice. People want fairness, accountability, and wrongs to be made right. But beneath every discussion about justice is a foundational question: Who determines what justice means? In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins explains that true justice is not a human invention. Justice is rooted in the perfectly righteous character of God and revealed in His Word. Law should reflect what is right by providing structure, accountability, and protection within society. When justice is separated from God, it becomes unstable and vulnerable to definitions based on power, emotion, and shifting cultural values. Christians must evaluate every claim about justice through Scripture while holding together justice, mercy, kindness, and humility.

Justice, Mercy, and Humility

Micah 6:8 teaches that God requires His people “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly” with Him. Scripture does not separate justice from God’s character or from the virtues of mercy and humility. Justice without mercy can become harsh, while mercy without justice can become empty.Christians must therefore resist cultural definitions of justice that are detached from the truth of Scripture. God alone defines what is right, and His unchanging Word gives believers clarity for thinking about law, authority, society, and the treatment of others.
