Education profoundly shapes people and cultures. Every educational system communicates beliefs about truth, morality, human identity, and the purpose of life. Christians are therefore right to care deeply about what shapes the hearts and minds of the next generation.The Seven Mountain Mandate responds to this concern by teaching that Christians must reclaim schools, universities, and educational institutions to advance God’s kingdom. Although this strategy may sound compelling, Scripture never defines institutional conquest as the mission of Christ’s church.In this episode of Contending for the Word, Dave Jenkins examines the educational mountain through Deuteronomy 6, Proverbs, Matthew 28, Acts 2, Ephesians 4, and 2 Timothy 3. He explains how God shapes the next generation through faithful parents, biblical wisdom, sound churches, gospel proclamation, and ordinary discipleship.

Education Is Never Neutral

Education does more than communicate facts. It forms people by teaching them how to understand reality, morality, identity, and the meaning of life. Every classroom, curriculum, and educational philosophy rests upon foundational beliefs about God, humanity, truth, and the world.Christians should care about education because ideas have consequences. The question, however, is not whether education matters. The question is whether Christ commissioned His church to establish His kingdom by taking control of educational institutions.

Influence Is Not Dominion

Christians should honor Christ wherever He has placed them. Christian teachers, professors, administrators, researchers, and students should pursue truth, wisdom, integrity, and excellence.Faithful influence, however, is not the same as dominion. Vocation is not ecclesiology, and Christian service within an institution is not the same as making institutional control the mission of the church. The New Testament calls believers to serve as salt and light, not to measure faithfulness by cultural power.

God’s Pattern for Discipling the Next Generation

Deuteronomy 6 places the primary responsibility for the spiritual formation of children upon parents. God’s truth is to fill the ordinary rhythms of family life as fathers and mothers diligently teach their children and model wholehearted love for the Lord.The home is the first classroom, and parents are the primary disciplers of their children. Schools and churches can provide valuable support, but they cannot replace the responsibility God has entrusted to parents.

Biblical Education Forms Wise Hearts

The book of Proverbs teaches that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom. Biblical education is not limited to filling the mind with information. It seeks to form people who know God, walk in wisdom, resist temptation, practice integrity, and live faithfully before Him.Institutional power cannot produce this transformation. Educational policies cannot regenerate sinners or give them new hearts. Only the Holy Spirit can bring spiritual life through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Local Church Makes and Equips Disciples

Jesus established His church and commissioned it to make disciples, baptize believers, and teach them to obey everything He commanded. Through biblical preaching, sound doctrine, prayer, fellowship, and the ordinary means of grace, Christ equips His people for faithful service.The mission of the church is not to conquer cultural mountains. It is to proclaim Christ, make disciples, guard sound doctrine, and equip believers to serve God faithfully in every area of life.

The Gospel Transforms People From the Inside Out

The world often assumes that changing systems will change people. The gospel changes people, and transformed people begin living differently within the families, churches, workplaces, schools, and communities where God has placed them.Institutional influence cannot regenerate the human heart. Only Christ saves, only the Holy Spirit gives new life, and only the gospel reconciles sinners to God. Cultural influence may follow gospel faithfulness, but it must never replace the church’s God-given mission.

Faithful Christian Engagement in Education

Rejecting the Seven Mountain Mandate does not require Christians to abandon education. Believers should serve with wisdom, integrity, excellence, and love wherever God places them.Christian families may pursue homeschooling, Christian schooling, private education, or public education according to their circumstances and convictions. The Bible does not require one educational model for every family. It does, however, consistently hold parents responsible for the spiritual formation of their children.Christians should engage education faithfully, but their confidence must remain in Christ, His gospel, His sufficient Word, and His church rather than cultural dominance. Christ commissioned His church to make disciples, not conquer cultural mountains.
