Why Are Doreen Virtue’s New Age Products Still Being Sold?

By Doreen Virtue

Editor’s Note: In this article, Doreen Virtue explains why her former New Age books and products continue to circulate in the marketplace even after her conversion to Jesus Christ. Her testimony serves as a reminder of the power of the gospel to rescue sinners from deception and to transform lives through the truth of God’s Word.

I once had wealth, fame, and influence in the world, yet I would trade it all again in a heartbeat for the salvation and peace that Jesus Christ gives.

You can gain the whole world and still be empty, yet when you gain Christ you have everything that truly matters. Walking away from the New Age cost me many things, including relationships, income, and reputation, yet knowing Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior is worth infinitely more. The world once gave me fame and fortune, yet Christ gave me forgiveness and eternal life.

Because my old New Age cards and books are still being sold, some people accuse me of being a fraud, a scammer, or a hypocrite. They claim that if I were sincere about my faith, my former work would no longer exist.

I understand why people might wonder about this, so I want to explain the truth.

First, I do not personally sell any New Age products. I have not done so since I became a Christian.

If my former work had been self-published, I would have immediately removed it from sale. Yet my books and card decks were licensed and published by my former publisher. I do not own or control those publishing rights.

There are also many used copies of my old books and card decks circulating in the marketplace. People resell them online and in used bookstores. There is no way for me to stop individuals from selling items they already purchased.

In addition, my former publisher has told me that there are illegal bootleg printers in countries such as India and China who produce counterfeit versions of products from their catalog, including some of my old work. These companies print the items without permission and sell them online.

The publisher takes legal action against them when possible. Yet when one company is shut down, another often appears under a different name. It becomes a constant cycle, almost like a game of “Whack-a-Mole.”

Another clue that some of these products are counterfeit is that they contain QR codes on the back. When my former publisher originally produced these cards, they never used QR codes. Only the illegal copies include them, and often the codes do not even work.

There are also foreign publishers who licensed my books years ago. Some of those agreements were made long before I became a Christian, and those books continue to circulate in other countries.

So while my old work still appears in the marketplace, I do not sell it and I do not control its distribution.

Another accusation that often appears online is that I am secretly a multi-millionaire. People claim I’m pretending to be a Christian while continuing to profit from my New Age past. That claim is simply not true.

The truth is that before I was saved, I did make a large amount of money through my New Age work. In 2016, the year before I became a Christian, my income was about four million dollars.

Yet I was living an extremely lavish lifestyle at the time. I owned a fifty-acre ranch in Hawaii where I rescued animals, and much of my income went toward caring for them. I was also living extravagantly in ways that now seem foolish and irresponsible.

I didn’t have a savings account. I assumed the money would keep coming. Then everything changed.

In late 2017, while reading the Bible, I came to a passage that broke my pride and convicted me of my sins, leading to my repentance, salvation, and walking away from the New Age:

“There shall not be found among you anyone who practices divination, or tells fortunes, or interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 18:10–12)

When I read those verses, God opened my eyes to the reality of my sin. I suddenly understood that the practices I had promoted in the New Age were condemned by God. I was deeply convicted, and I repented of my sins and gave my life to Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

One month later, my publisher fired me. They told me that when I posted Deuteronomy 18:10–12 on my Facebook page, it offended members of the witchcraft community who followed their company.

After my conversion, I began issuing refunds to people who had recently purchased my New Age courses and products. My former publisher also issued refunds for a time. We did this for about two years. Eventually I ran out of money.

At the time, my elderly parents were living with us (they’ve since passed away). Because our income dropped off a cliff after my conversion, we gave the ranch back to the family we’d been purchasing it from, and we moved into a multi-generational home so my parents could live with us.

There was also another major financial burden: Because I’d earned so much income the year before my conversion, I owed about two million dollars in taxes. I hadn’t set aside the money to pay that bill. Since then, I’ve been paying those taxes year by year. Interest and penalties have continued to accumulate.

Today my home has an IRS lien on it. I live on Social Security along with whatever modest income comes from my YouTube channel and occasional Christian book sales. My husband lost his job last year and is currently seeking employment.

I do receive small residual royalties from some foreign book sales. Every dollar of that income goes toward paying the taxes from my New Age years.

So there’s no “rich and famous lifestyle” happening here. Some people try to destroy my witness by claiming that I secretly have great wealth. The truth is the opposite. Before I was saved, I was making millions of dollars. When God opened my eyes to the truth of His Word, I walked away from that life in order to follow Jesus Christ.

Today I live on a much smaller income. Yet I would make the same decision again without hesitation. Scripture says: “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).

Following Jesus also cost me many relationships, as some secular family members and former friends no longer speak to me because of my faith in Christ. When I turned away from the New Age and began sharing what the Bible says about these practices, some people distanced themselves or cut off contact completely.

That loss of people I love has been painful at times. Yet Jesus warned that following Him can divide families when some believe and others reject the truth (Matthew 10:34–36). Even so, I pray for them and ask the Lord to open their eyes as He once opened mine, because the salvation that Christ gives is worth every earthly loss.

Before Christ, I had everything the world values: fame, wealth, and influence. Yet my heart was empty. Now I have far less in worldly terms. Yet I have peace, forgiveness, and the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ. My heart breaks for my prior sins, and yearns to praise and please God for the rest of my life. And that is worth more than anything this world could offer.

If you’re still involved in the New Age or occult practices, I understand the pull because I once lived in that world myself. Yet there’s peace, freedom and forgiveness available to you through Jesus Christ. God’s Word says: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

No matter how deep someone has gone into deception, the grace of God is greater. Jesus came to save sinners, and He receives everyone who turns to Him in repentance and faith. My prayer is that you would seek the truth in God’s Word and discover the same peace, forgiveness, and new life that only Christ can give.

Jesus Christ came to earth as fully God and fully man. He was the only one to live a sinless life, and He intentionally died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. He physically rose from the dead three days later, defeating death and offering eternal life to all who repent and believe in Him. You’re not saved by good works, spiritual rituals, or self-effort, but by God’s grace through faith in Jesus alone. If you’re weary, lost, or searching for truth, have faith in Christ: He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him.
