Full Article

In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Doreen Virtue answers an important question from a listener who wanted to better understand why Christians should take a strong stance against yoga—not only as a practice, but also in connection with objects that may carry spiritual symbolism.

Doreen explains that when she came out of the New Age movement, she threw away her yoga mats because many of them were decorated with Hindu, occult, and New Age imagery. Some included chakra symbols, which reflect a false religious belief system about spiritual energy centers. Others displayed deities from Hinduism or Buddhism, while still others contained New Age phrases and spiritual jargon. For Doreen, getting rid of those items was part of turning away from beliefs and practices that did not conform to the truth of God’s Word.

This raises an important issue for Christians today. The question is not merely whether a mat made of rubber or foam is inherently sinful. A plain exercise mat, in itself, may be morally neutral. The deeper concern is whether a particular object is tied to false religion, spiritual deception, or symbolism that conflicts with biblical truth. Christians are called to exercise discernment and to reject anything that normalizes or celebrates beliefs contrary to the gospel.

At the same time, Doreen makes clear that physical stretching and exercise are not the problem. She notes that she stretches daily and uses non-yoga Pilates-based exercise as part of maintaining her health and flexibility. She also points to physical therapy stretches and other forms of neutral exercise as helpful alternatives. The issue is not movement itself, but participation in poses, symbols, or practices rooted in spiritual systems opposed to the Lord.

That distinction matters. Christians should not confuse biblical discernment with legalism. Legalism adds human rules where Scripture does not speak. Discernment, however, seeks to apply biblical truth wisely to real-life situations. When an object or practice has clear associations with false worship, occult spirituality, or New Age ideology, believers should not dismiss those concerns lightly. Instead, they should ask whether their choices honor Christ, protect their conscience, and reflect a wholehearted allegiance to the truth.

Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to flee idolatry, reject false religion, and live in a way that is distinct from the world. In a culture that often blurs spiritual boundaries, Christians need wisdom, biblical conviction, and a renewed commitment to the sufficiency of Scripture. That means refusing to treat spiritual compromise as harmless, even when it comes packaged in something as common or culturally accepted as yoga.

This episode offers a needed reminder that faithfulness to Christ involves both truth and practice. Believers are not called merely to avoid obvious error, but to grow in discernment so that every area of life is brought under the authority of God’s Word.
