Gratitude Begins with God’s Character
Our circumstances, feelings, and plans change. God’s character does not. Biblical gratitude looks to His goodness, mercy, sovereignty, and faithfulness. Remembering who God is gives us reason to thank Him even when we do not understand what He is doing.Jesus Christ Is Our Greatest Reason for Thanksgiving
For Christians, our greatest reason for gratitude is Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, everyone who turns from sin and trusts in Him receives forgiveness and reconciliation with God. If you belong to Christ, suffering cannot take away the riches of His grace or separate you from His love.Giving Thanks in the Midst of Suffering
Giving thanks in all circumstances does not mean pretending that every circumstance is good. Scripture gives us language for lament, grief, and prayer. We can grieve honestly while thanking God that He has not abandoned us, that Christ remains sufficient, and that His promises remain true.Gratitude Shapes Christian Character
Thanksgiving helps us recognize God’s ordinary mercies and confronts entitlement, envy, comparison, bitterness, and discontentment. As we remember His daily provision, our attention returns to His faithfulness and the grace we have received in Christ.Five Ways to Cultivate Biblical Gratitude
- Begin with God’s character. Remember who He is before evaluating your circumstances.
- Root your gratitude in the gospel. Give thanks for the forgiveness, peace, and hope you have in Christ.
- Grieve honestly. Bring your sorrow to God while continuing to trust His faithfulness.
- Recognize His ordinary gifts. Thank Him for daily provision, your church, friendships, and opportunities to serve.
- Make thanksgiving a daily practice. Regularly remember His goodness and thank Him for His grace.
