By Dave Jenkins | Contending for the Word Q&ABiblical gratitude begins with who God is and what He has done for us in Jesus Christ. When life is difficult, thanksgiving can seem far away. Yet Scripture calls Christians to give thanks in all circumstances because God’s goodness and faithfulness remain. In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins begins November’s focus on gratitude and Christian character. Drawing on 1 Thessalonians 5:18 and Colossians 3:15–17, he explains how the gospel shapes a thankful heart through both joy and suffering.

Gratitude Begins with God’s Character

Our circumstances, feelings, and plans change. God’s character does not. Biblical gratitude looks to His goodness, mercy, sovereignty, and faithfulness. Remembering who God is gives us reason to thank Him even when we do not understand what He is doing.

Jesus Christ Is Our Greatest Reason for Thanksgiving

For Christians, our greatest reason for gratitude is Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, everyone who turns from sin and trusts in Him receives forgiveness and reconciliation with God. If you belong to Christ, suffering cannot take away the riches of His grace or separate you from His love.

Giving Thanks in the Midst of Suffering

Giving thanks in all circumstances does not mean pretending that every circumstance is good. Scripture gives us language for lament, grief, and prayer. We can grieve honestly while thanking God that He has not abandoned us, that Christ remains sufficient, and that His promises remain true.

Gratitude Shapes Christian Character

Thanksgiving helps us recognize God’s ordinary mercies and confronts entitlement, envy, comparison, bitterness, and discontentment. As we remember His daily provision, our attention returns to His faithfulness and the grace we have received in Christ.

Five Ways to Cultivate Biblical Gratitude

  1. Begin with God’s character. Remember who He is before evaluating your circumstances.
  2. Root your gratitude in the gospel. Give thanks for the forgiveness, peace, and hope you have in Christ.
  3. Grieve honestly. Bring your sorrow to God while continuing to trust His faithfulness.
  4. Recognize His ordinary gifts. Thank Him for daily provision, your church, friendships, and opportunities to serve.
  5. Make thanksgiving a daily practice. Regularly remember His goodness and thank Him for His grace.

Key Scripture

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18: Giving thanks in all circumstances as God’s will for believers in Christ Jesus.
  • Colossians 3:15–17: Thanksgiving within a life shaped by Christ’s peace, His Word, and His name.
Whether today brings joy or difficulty, abundance or need, you can give thanks because God is good, Christ is sufficient, and His promises are sure.
