The Core Theological Errors of the New Age Movement
By Doreen Virtue | Contending for the Word Q&A
Show Summary
Question: What are the main theological errors at the heart of the New Age movement?
In this Contending for the Word Q&A episode, Doreen Virtue explains why the New Age is not a harmless
collection of self-help ideas but a spiritual system that directly contradicts the gospel. Drawing from
Scripture and from her own background in New Age and New Thought, she shows how New Age beliefs deny the
character of God, distort the identity of Jesus, undermine the authority of the Bible, reject the need for
repentance, and replace the true gospel with self-salvation and spiritual techniques.

Full Article / Episode Notes
Below is a structured summary of the main theological errors in the New Age movement and how Scripture answers each one.
1. The New Age Distorts the Nature of God
New Age spirituality often teaches that God is an impersonal force, the universe itself, or a divine spark within
every person. This collapses the distinction between Creator and creation and treats God as a source of energy we
can manipulate. Scripture, however, reveals that God is personal, holy, sovereign, and separate from His creation
(Isaiah 45:5; Romans 1:25).
2. The New Age Denies the Truth About Jesus Christ
In New Age and New Thought teachings, Jesus is reduced to a created being, guru, or “ascended master” among many. Some even turn His “I am” statements into personal affirmations of divinity. Biblically, Jesus is God the Son,
truly God and truly man, the eternal second Person of the Trinity, the only way to the Father (John 14:6; 1 John 4).
3. The New Age Undermines the Authority of Scripture
New Age teachers frequently claim that the Bible is corrupted, mistranslated, or censored and elevate so-called
“lost gospels” or extra-biblical texts. These claims ignore the historical and textual reliability of Scripture and
the late, counterfeit nature of many of those writings. God’s Word is inspired, sufficient, and trustworthy
(2 Timothy 3:16–17; John 17:17).
4. The New Age Denies Sin and the Need for Repentance
Rather than teaching that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, the New Age reframes our problem as
“low vibration,” negative thinking, or blocked energy. Practices like A Course in Miracles even deny the reality of
sin and the cross. Scripture teaches that our problem is sin, not ignorance, and that God now commands all people
everywhere to repent (Romans 3:23; Acts 17:30).
5. The New Age Offers a False Gospel of Self-Salvation
Manifestation, raising your vibration, reincarnation, and spiritual techniques are held out as the path to
enlightenment and “heaven.” The cross is sidelined or denied. Yet the Bible is clear that salvation is by grace
alone through faith alone in Christ alone, who gave Himself as a ransom for sinners (Ephesians 2:8–9;
1 Timothy 2:5–6; Romans 5:8).
6. The New Age Ignores the Reality of Spiritual Warfare
New Age spirituality often mocks or dismisses the existence of Satan and demons, even while engaging in practices
that Scripture warns against, such as channeling, divination, and seeking messages from spirits. The Bible teaches
that we are in a real spiritual battle and must stand firm in the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–18;
Deuteronomy 18:10–12).
For those coming out of the New Age, the hope of the gospel is that Jesus Christ truly saves, forgives, and
transforms all who turn from sin and trust in Him.
Takeaways & Reflection Questions
- Where have you seen New Age ideas or language creeping into churches, books, or social media content?
- How does Scripture’s teaching on the holiness of God and the deity of Christ expose the error of New Age views of “God” and “Christ consciousness”?
- Are there practices you have treated as neutral that Scripture actually warns against? What steps of repentance and replacement with biblical truth might be needed?
- How can you grow in daily reliance on God’s Word so that you are better equipped to discern counterfeit spirituality?
