Responding to Woke Theology with Scripture and the Gospel
📅 Contending for the Word Q&A – September 22, 2025
Question: How should Christians respond to woke theology?
Introduction
In recent years, “wokeness” has shifted from an awareness of social injustice to a worldview that redefines truth, identity, and morality. Sadly, aspects of this ideology have found their way into churches, blending cultural categories with biblical teaching. The question many believers are asking is clear, How should Christians respond to woke theology?
What Is Woke Theology?
Woke theology brings the categories of critical theory, race, class, gender, and sexuality, into Christianity. At its core, it tends to:
- View people primarily as oppressed or oppressors
- Redefine sin as societal systems rather than rebellion against God
- Focus more on social justice than salvation
- Undermine the sufficiency of Scripture by adopting secular definitions of truth and identity
A Biblical Response
The Bible provides a clear and sufficient response to these distortions.
- Affirm God’s Definition of Justice – True justice flows from God’s character (Micah 6:8, Psalm 89:14), and it is rooted in His law, not cultural trends.
- Remember the Real Problem – Sin is the root issue (Romans 3:23), and while social systems may reflect injustice, hearts enslaved to sin are the deeper cause.
- Hold Fast to the Gospel – The good news is reconciliation with God through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18–21), not mere liberation from earthly oppression.
- Stand on Scripture Alone – God’s Word defines truth and identity (2 Timothy 3:16–17), not ideology.
- Love and Truth Together – Christians are called to speak truth with boldness, while showing compassion to those who are hurting. The gospel addresses both sin and suffering.
How Christians Should Respond
Responding to woke theology requires both discernment and conviction.
- Discern Carefully – Many terms sound compassionate, but carry definitions foreign to Scripture.
- Teach Biblically – Churches must proclaim God’s design for humanity, sin, justice, and redemption.
- Stay Christ-Centered – Only Christ unites people from every tribe, tongue, and nation (Revelation 7:9).
- Reject Syncretism – Mixing woke ideology with the gospel leads to distortion (Galatians 1:6–9).
Conclusion
Woke theology is dangerous because it replaces God’s holiness and grace in Christ with man-centered categories of justice and identity.
Christians must respond with compassion, conviction, and clarity, holding fast to Scripture, proclaiming the gospel, and demonstrating that true reconciliation and justice are found only in Jesus Christ.
