By Dave Jenkins | Contending for the Word Q&ACompromise often begins with small departures from God’s Word. In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins explains how softened doctrine weakens the church’s witness, confuses believers, and obscures the gospel. Drawing on Scripture and lessons from church history, he calls Christians to sound doctrine, repentance, faithful preaching, and confidence in the sufficiency of God’s Word.

How Compromising Biblical Truth Begins

Churches rarely abandon biblical truth overnight. Compromise often begins when an unpopular teaching is softened, a difficult passage is ignored, or cultural opinion is placed alongside Scripture instead of being evaluated by it.In 2 Timothy 4:3–4, Paul warns that people will turn away from sound teaching and gather teachers who tell them what they want to hear. In Revelation 2:14–16 and 20, Jesus confronts churches that tolerate false teaching. These warnings remind us that faithfulness requires discernment and a willingness to receive the correction of God’s Word.

Compromise Confuses Believers

When biblical truth becomes unclear, believers become uncertain. Questions Scripture answers become matters of opinion, and confidence in God’s Word begins to weaken. The church is called to proclaim truth clearly. First Timothy 3:15 describes the church as a pillar and buttress of the truth. Faithful teaching helps God’s people grow in their understanding of Scripture and remain anchored in Christ.

A Weakened Witness and an Obscured Gospel

The church’s mission is to proclaim Christ. When it reshapes its message to fit cultural expectations, it obscures the very message the world needs to hear. The gospel confronts sin and calls people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Faithful churches must proclaim that message clearly, lovingly, and without apology.

Repentance and Renewed Obedience to God’s Word

Church history reminds us that God faithfully preserves His people and calls them back to His Word. The Reformation provides one example of the church’s need to recover biblical authority and gospel clarity.Renewal begins with repentance and renewed obedience to Scripture. Christians and local churches continually need the correction, encouragement, and instruction of God’s Word.

Four Practical Responses to Compromise

  • Recognize small departures from truth. Take seriously the gradual softening or neglect of biblical teaching.
  • Remain committed to sound doctrine. Hold fast to Scripture even when its teaching is unpopular.
  • Pray for faithful preaching. Ask the Lord to help your pastors proclaim the whole counsel of God with clarity and courage.
  • Trust the sufficiency of God’s Word. Depend on Scripture to guide and strengthen the church.
Compromise never strengthens the church. Faithfulness does. May we love God’s Word, proclaim the gospel faithfully, and remain steadfast in the truth entrusted to us.
