Show Summary
The Trinity is not a secondary doctrine or mere theological language. The Bible teaches that there is one true God who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins explains the biblical doctrine of the Trinity and why it is essential to the gospel and Christian worship.

What Does the Bible Teach About the Trinity?
Scripture teaches that there is one true God. Christianity is not tritheistic. God is one in essence and being.
At the same time, the Bible clearly distinguishes the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is not the Son. The Son is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not the Father. They are distinct persons, yet each is fully God.
Jesus commands His disciples to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). Paul likewise speaks of “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit” (2 Corinthians 13:14).
The Trinity and the Gospel
The Trinity is essential to understanding the gospel. The Father sends the Son, the Son accomplishes redemption, and the Holy Spirit applies Christ’s finished work to believers. This truth should lead Christians to humility, reverence, and worship before the God who has revealed Himself in His Word.
The Trinity is the Bible’s revelation of who God is: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God forever worthy of worship.
