The Gospel Frees Us from Shame and Pride

Shame tells us that we are unworthy and can never be accepted. Pride tells us that we are sufficient and do not need help. Although these struggles appear to be opposites, both seek identity and worth apart from Jesus Christ.

The Gospel Confronts Pride and Heals Shame

In this episode of Anchored in the Word, Dave Jenkins explains from Romans 3:22–24 how the gospel humbles human pride while healing the shame of repentant sinners. Every person has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, leaving no room for boasting before Him. Yet sinners are justified freely by God’s grace through the redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ.Shame says, “I am not enough. I am unworthy. I can never be accepted.” Pride says, “I am enough. I do not need help. I can stand on my own strength.” Both struggles direct our attention inward and attempt to establish identity apart from the worthiness and sufficiency of Christ. The gospel points believers away from personal performance and toward Jesus Christ alone. Christians are not accepted by God because they are worthy in themselves. They are accepted because of the perfect righteousness of Christ and His finished work on their behalf.

The Grace of Justification

“The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:22–24
Justification is God’s legal declaration that a sinner is righteous before Him. This declaration is not based on human merit, religious effort, morality, or achievement. It rests entirely on the righteousness of Christ credited to believers through faith. The cross tells us that our sin is far worse than we imagined and that God’s grace is far greater than we dared hope. The gospel therefore leaves no room for boasting and no reason for despair.

How the Gospel Frees Believers

Stop Grounding Your Identity in Performance

Your identity is not determined by your greatest success or your deepest failure. The Christian’s worth is found in the worthiness and sufficiency of Jesus Christ alone.

Confess Sin Honestly

The gospel enables believers to confess their sin without hiding behind pride or drowning in shame. Christians can walk in repentance because forgiveness and restoration are found in Christ.

Rest in the Finished Work of Christ

Because of Jesus, believers are forgiven, accepted, and loved by God. At the cross, Christ bore the guilt and condemnation His people deserved. Through His death and resurrection, He accomplished redemption and reconciliation for them.
