God Condemns Injustice and Oppression

Isaiah opens with a woe against those who make unjust decrees and deprive the needy, widows, and fatherless of justice (Isaiah 10:1–4). God sees the abuse of authority and the oppression of vulnerable people. He is not indifferent to injustice, and those who use power wickedly will answer to Him.

God Uses Nations to Accomplish His Purposes

Assyria believed its conquests came through its own wisdom and strength. But God calls Assyria “the rod of my anger” (Isaiah 10:5). The nation was acting wickedly and would be judged for its arrogance, yet it was still under the sovereign authority of God. Even powerful nations operate under His rule.

Human Pride Invites God’s Judgment

Assyria boasted in its military might, wealth, and success. God answers with a searching question: “Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it?” (Isaiah 10:15). The tool does not exalt itself over the craftsman who uses it. Human pride forgets that every ability, position, and accomplishment is ultimately accountable to God.

God Preserves a Faithful Remnant

Judgment does not overturn God’s promises. Isaiah declares that a remnant of Israel will return and lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth (Isaiah 10:20–22). God faithfully preserves His people by grace, even in seasons of judgment and upheaval.

Christ Reigns Over Every Power

Isaiah 10 directs our eyes beyond earthly rulers and temporary kingdoms to Jesus Christ. Kings rise and fall, nations expand and decline, but Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords. Because He reigns, Christians can reject fear, refuse pride, pursue righteousness, and rest in God’s unchanging purposes.
