Isaiah 7: The Sign of Immanuel and Faith in God’s Promises
In Isaiah 7, King Ahaz faces a moment of intense fear. Enemy nations have joined together against Judah, and the king and his people are shaken. Yet God sends Isaiah with a clear command: trust the Lord rather than fear the circumstances.This chapter contains one of the clearest messianic promises in the Old Testament. God promises a sign to the house of David: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Fear Tempts Us to Distrust God
Ahaz and the people of Judah were overwhelmed by the threat before them. Their hearts shook “as the trees of the forest shake before the wind” (Isaiah 7:2). Through Isaiah, the Lord tells Ahaz, “Be careful, be quiet, do not fear” (Isaiah 7:4). The plans of Judah’s enemies would not ultimately stand because God is sovereign. The Lord’s word remains true: “If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all” (Isaiah 7:9).Unbelief Can Hide Behind Religious Language
When God graciously offers Ahaz a sign, the king refuses with words that sound spiritual. But Ahaz’s refusal is not faith. He has already chosen to trust political alliances rather than the Lord. Religious words cannot cover an unbelieving heart.The Promise of Immanuel
Isaiah 7:14 points beyond Ahaz’s immediate circumstances to the coming of Jesus Christ. Matthew tells us that this prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ: “They shall call his name Immanuel,” which means, God with us (Matthew 1:22–23).Jesus is God with us.
