Disordered Desires and the Hope of the Gospel

By Dave Jenkins | Servants of Grace PodcastSeries: Romans: The Gospel That Changes Everything Scripture: Romans 1:26–27
Our desires must be brought under the authority of the God who made us. In Romans 1:26–27, Paul connects dishonorable passions to humanity’s rejection of the Creator. His words expose the disorder sin brings to worship, desire, and the use of our bodies. In this episode of the Servants of Grace podcast, Dave Jenkins continues our verse-by-verse study of Romans, explaining God’s good design for sexuality, the enslaving power of sin, and the hope of the gospel. This passage calls every listener to humility, repentance, and faith in Jesus Christ.

Disordered Desire Flows from Disordered Worship

Paul’s opening words connect these verses to Romans 1:24–25. Humanity exchanges God’s truth for a lie and worships creation rather than the Creator. God’s judgment includes giving sinners over to the rebellion they have chosen. The strength or sincerity of a desire does not make it righteous. Every desire must be tested by God’s Word. Pride, greed, bitterness, lust, and sexual desires outside God’s design must be resisted rather than allowed to rule our lives.

God’s Good Design for Sexuality

Paul’s teaching rests on the created order. God made humanity male and female and established marriage as the covenant union of one man and one woman for life. The goodness of the body and sexuality comes from the Creator, whose design gives these gifts their meaning.Romans 1:26–27 addresses female and male same-sex sexual behavior as contrary to that design. Sexual holiness applies to everyone. Adultery, pornography, lust, and every other form of sexual immorality must also be brought under the authority of God’s Word. Christians must speak clearly about sin while treating people with patience, dignity, and compassion.

In This Episode

  • The connection between false worship and disordered desires.
  • God’s created order and the goodness of the body.
  • The enslaving power of sinful desires.
  • The distinction between temptation and sinful action.
  • Sin’s consequences and the danger of self-righteousness.
  • The forgiveness and transforming grace found in Jesus Christ.

Every Sinner Needs the Grace of Christ

Romans 1 must be read within Paul’s larger argument in Romans 1–3. Paul exposes humanity’s universal guilt and our need for the righteousness God provides through Christ. No Christian has grounds for pride when considering another person’s struggle with sin.Jesus Christ lived in perfect obedience, died for sinners, and rose bodily from the dead. Everyone who repents and trusts in Him receives forgiveness. The Savior who justifies His people also gives them His Spirit and teaches them to pursue holiness.

Responding to God’s Word

Bring sinful desires into the light, seek help from faithful believers in your local church, and depend on Christ as you resist temptation. Temptation does not place anyone beyond the mercy of God. Stand firmly on Scripture, speak the truth in love, and point others to the Savior who forgives, cleanses, and transforms.
