Psalm 34 is a psalm of thanksgiving written by David after God delivered him from danger during a dark and confusing season of life. Instead of fear dominating him, David responds with praise and calls God’s people to trust the Lord fully. This psalm is deeply pastoral—full of promise, comfort, and encouragement for those who feel broken, afraid, or uncertain. It teaches us not only to believe that God is good, but to taste His goodness personally through faith.

Episode Notes

Reading: Psalm 34

David begins with a commitment to bless the Lord at all times and invites the humble to rejoice and exalt God’s name
together. He recounts how the Lord heard his cry, delivered him from fear, and protected those who fear Him.
Psalm 34 calls us to “taste and see” the goodness of the Lord and to take refuge in Him.

1) An Invitation to Praise (Psalm 34:1–3)

  • David blesses the Lord at all times—good or bad.
  • He calls God’s people to rejoice and exalt the Lord together.
  • Lesson: Worship is a continual posture of the heart, not a momentary feeling.

2) God Hears and Delivers His People (Psalm 34:4–7)

  • David sought the Lord, and the Lord answered him.
  • Those who look to the Lord are radiant and not ashamed.
  • The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him.
  • Lesson: God delights to rescue the brokenhearted and the fearful who seek Him.

3) Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34:8–10)

  • This is the central invitation of the psalm: experience God’s goodness personally.
  • Those who fear the Lord lack no good thing.
  • Lesson: To “taste” is to trust—God’s goodness is experienced through faith.

4) The Path of Daily Living (Psalm 34:11–14)

  • Fear the Lord, speak truth, turn from evil, do good, and pursue peace.
  • Lesson: Faith in God produces a life marked by integrity and repentance.

5) God’s Nearness to the Brokenhearted (Psalm 34:15–18)

  • The Lord sees, hears, and cares for His people.
  • He is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
  • Lesson: God is not distant in suffering—He draws especially close to the hurting.

6) The Lord Redeems and Rescues His People (Psalm 34:19–22)

  • The righteous may suffer many afflictions, but the Lord delivers them out of them all.
  • Not one of their bones is broken—fulfilled in Christ (John 19:36).
  • Lesson: God faithfully preserves and redeems His people; those who take refuge in Him will not be condemned.

Psalm 34 Points Us to Christ

Jesus is the ultimate refuge for the crushed in spirit. He fulfills the prophecy that none of His bones would be broken
(John 19:36). In Christ, the goodness of God is not abstract—it is revealed in the face of our Savior. Jesus rescues
His people not only from earthly danger but from sin and death itself, and there is no condemnation for those who are
in Him.
