Praise from the Heavens
Psalm 148 begins by calling the heavens to praise the Lord. Angels, heavenly hosts, sun, moon, and stars are summoned to worship God because He created them and established them by His command. The lesson is clear: creation praises God because it owes its existence to Him.Praise from the Earth
The psalm then turns to the earth. Sea creatures, oceans, weather, mountains, trees, animals, birds, kings, rulers, young and old are all called to praise the Lord. The lesson is that life in every place and at every level is meant to glorify God.The Reason for Praise
Psalm 148 concludes by showing why the Lord is worthy of praise: “His name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven” (Psalm 148:13).God is uniquely worthy of worship because of His supreme greatness. He has also raised up a people for Himself, a people who are near to Him.Psalm 148 and Jesus Christ
Psalm 148 points us to Jesus Christ. Christ is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. As Colossians 1:16–17 teaches, all things were created through Him and for Him, and in Him all things hold together.Through Christ, God’s people are brought near and restored to their purpose: to glorify God and worship Him forever.Key Scriptures
