Recovering Justification by Faith Alone
One of Luther’s greatest contributions was his recovery of the doctrine of justification by faith alone in Christ alone. As he studied Scripture, he came to understand that sinners are declared righteous before God through faith in Christ rather than through human effort or religious works.
Romans 1:17 and Galatians 2:16 provide the biblical foundation for this truth. Salvation rests on Christ and His finished work, and justification is received through faith.
Confronting Error and Upholding Scripture
Luther challenged indulgences and other practices that obscured the gospel. His concern was to call the church back to biblical truth.
At the heart of his ministry was the conviction that Scripture is the final authority for faith and practice. That commitment shaped his preaching and his willingness to stand firm under opposition.
Lessons for Christians Today
Luther was an imperfect man. Yet his contribution to the Reformation reminds Christians of the importance of knowing the gospel, confronting error, and remaining faithful to God’s Word.
- Understand justification by faith alone in Christ alone.
- Recognize the importance of confronting teachings that obscure the gospel.
- Submit faith and practice to the authority of Scripture.
- Stand courageously for biblical truth, even when doing so is costly.
God used Luther to help recover the truth of the gospel and call the church back to His Word. God’s truth remains worth defending in every generation.
