Understanding Human Nature and the Reality of Sin

Q: What is the biblical view of human nature and sin?

To understand the world, ourselves, and the gospel, we must understand what Scripture teaches about human nature. Our culture often tells us that people are basically good, that truth lives inside us, and that the real problem is outside of us. Scripture teaches the opposite. Our deepest problem is within, and our only hope is found in Christ.

1. We Are Created in the Image of God

Human dignity begins with creation. Genesis 1:27 tells us that every person, regardless of age, ability, background, or stage of life, is created with worth, purpose, and value. We were made to reflect the character of God, represent His rule, and enjoy fellowship with Him.

2. Because of the Fall, Our Nature Is Corrupted by Sin

Romans 3:23 reminds us that all have sinned. Sin is not only the wrong things we do, it is a condition of the heart. Jeremiah 17:9 describes the heart as deceitful above all things. Our thoughts, desires, motives, and affections have been bent away from God. We do not simply make mistakes, we rebel against Him.

3. Sin Touches Every Part of Who We Are

Theologians use the term total depravity. This does not mean we are as evil as we could be, it means every part of us is affected by sin.

  • Mind (Romans 1:21)
  • Will (Romans 8:7)
  • Emotions (Ephesians 4:18–19)
  • Desires (James 1:14)

Apart from grace, we are spiritually dead, as Ephesians 2:1 makes clear.

4. Sin Separates Us from God and Brings Judgment

Sin is not merely a weakness, it is rebellion against a holy God. Romans 6:23 teaches that the wages of sin is death. No amount of moral improvement or self effort can fix this condition. We do not need a spiritual tune up, we need resurrection.

5. In Christ, God Gives Us a New Nature

This is the wonder of the gospel. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. God does not simply repair the old heart, He gives a new one, as Ezekiel 36:26 promises. Through the Holy Spirit, believers receive new affections, new desires, new strength, and a new direction.

6. The Christian Life Involves a Daily Battle with the Flesh

Even as new creations, we still struggle with indwelling sin. Romans 7 shows the believer’s battle. Romans 8 gives the hope. By the power of the Spirit, we put sin to death and grow in Christlikeness.

A Hopeful and Honest View of Humanity

The biblical view of human nature is honest, humbling, and deeply hopeful. It tells the truth about our condition so that we might see the greatness of God’s grace. We were dead in sin, but God made us alive in Christ. This is the heart of the gospel and the hope of every believer.
