How Christians Should Respond to Suffering

Suffering raises difficult questions, but Scripture does more than explain why trials occur. God’s Word also teaches Christians how they should respond when pain lingers and circumstances do not make sense.

How Should Christians Respond to Suffering?

When trials come, when pain continues, and when circumstances do not make sense, Christians naturally ask why suffering is happening. But there is another important question believers must ask: How should Christians respond to suffering?Understanding suffering matters, but how we respond to suffering matters as well. Scripture calls Christians to respond with humility, trust, perseverance, and prayer.

Humble Yourself Before the Lord

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”1 Peter 5:6–7
Suffering reminds us that we are not in control. Scripture calls Christians to humble themselves under the mighty hand of God.Humility does not mean that Christians will immediately understand everything God is doing. It means recognizing who God is and remembering who we are. The Lord remains sovereign, wise, good, and faithful even when His purposes are difficult for us to see.

Trust God When You Do Not Understand

Trusting God in suffering is not easy, but it is essential to the Christian life.Trust means believing that God is good, that He is perfectly wise, and that He is at work even when we cannot see what He is doing.Christians do not place their confidence in circumstances. They place their confidence in the unchanging character of God.

Persevere Through the Trial

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”Romans 12:12
Suffering often lasts longer than we expect. That is where perseverance becomes especially important.Scripture calls Christians to be patient in tribulation, to endure, and to keep going. This perseverance does not come from our own strength. Christians endure by depending upon the Lord.Biblical perseverance is not pretending that suffering does not hurt. It is continuing to trust and follow Christ while walking through the difficulty.

Turn to God in Prayer

Suffering should drive Christians toward God rather than away from Him.Prayer is not a last resort. It is a lifeline.Christians can bring their fears, questions, burdens, anxieties, and pain before the Lord because He hears His people and cares for them.First Peter 5:7 reminds believers to cast their anxieties upon God because He cares for them. The Christian does not suffer alone or unnoticed. The Lord remains present and attentive to His people.

Four Biblical Responses to Suffering

  1. Humble yourself before the Lord.
  2. Trust the Lord even when you do not understand.
  3. Persevere through the trial.
  4. Turn to God in prayer.
Christians cannot always control the suffering they experience, but their response to suffering matters greatly. God’s Word calls believers to respond in a way that reflects confidence in His goodness, wisdom, sovereignty, and care.
