Contending for the Word Q&A

How Christians Resist Being Shaped by Culture (Romans 12:1–2)

Host: Dave Jenkins

Show Summary

We live in an age where pressure to conform is constant. Culture is always discipling us—through voices, values, narratives, and assumptions. The question is not whether culture influences us, but how, and whether we recognize it.

Today’s Question: How do Christians resist being shaped by culture while still living faithfully in the world God has placed us in?

Central Truth: Christians resist being shaped by culture by renewing their minds through Scripture, setting their hearts on Christ, and living under His lordship rather than the world’s pressure.

1) Culture Is Always Discipling Us

Culture is not neutral. It catechizes. It teaches. It trains. It normalizes assumptions. It tells us what matters, what success looks like, what happiness requires, and what truth should feel like. Paul does not say, “Be careful not to be overly influenced.” He says, “Do not be conformed.”

2) Resistance Begins with a Renewed Mind

Paul’s answer is not political power, cultural withdrawal, or outrage—it is the renewal of the mind. A renewed mind thinks biblically, evaluates claims carefully, recognizes false assumptions, and submits to God’s revealed truth. You cannot resist cultural pressure if your thinking is continually shaped by unfiltered media, trends over truth, and feelings over facts. Renewal happens as the Word of God reshapes how we see God, ourselves, and the world.

3) Set Your Heart on Christ, Not the World

Colossians 3:1–4 calls believers to set their minds on things above—where Christ is—rather than on earthly things. This does not mean ignoring daily life. It means reordering life around Christ as central. When Christ is central, culture loses its power, approval loses its grip, and fear loses its authority. Discernment flows from devotion.

4) Faithful Resistance Is Steady, Not Reactive

Resisting culture does not mean reacting to everything loudly. It means steady obedience, quiet faithfulness, clear convictions, and humble courage. The goal is not to win cultural arguments.
The goal is to remain faithful to Christ. Faithfulness may look unimpressive to the world,
but it is precious in the sight of God.

Dear Christian: Do not drift toward faithfulness. You are shaped by what you love.
Trust and obey. Resist conformity by renewing your mind. Resist pressure by clinging to Christ. Resist fear by remembering who you belong to.

Practical Next Steps

  • Examine what is shaping your thinking (inputs, voices, habits).
  • Evaluate what you consume daily (media, social platforms, entertainment).
  • Anchor your convictions in the Word of God—not in trends or outrage.
  • Set your heart intentionally on Christ through prayer and Scripture.
  • Pursue steady obedience in your local church and daily discipleship.

Takeaways & Reflection Questions

  • What voices shape my daily assumptions more than Scripture?
  • Where am I tempted to conform to culture to avoid rejection or discomfort?
  • What would it look like to “renew my mind” this week in a specific way?
  • How can I pursue faithful obedience without becoming fearful, angry, or isolated?
