Finding Delight Again in Busy or Dry Seasons
By Dave Jenkins |
Contending for the Word Q&A | January 7, 2026
Show Summary
Q: How can we delight in the Word of God daily when life feels busy or dry?
In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins addresses an honest and practical question that many Christians face. There are seasons when our schedules feel overwhelming and times when our hearts feel cold or distracted. Yet God calls His people to delight in His Word not as a burden, but as our joy, strength, and life.
Drawing from Psalm 1 and Psalm 119, Dave explains that delight in Scripture is not merely emotional. It is rooted
in knowing God, treasuring His truth, and depending on His grace daily. Faithfulness fuels delight, not the other
way around. Even in dry seasons, the Lord meets His people through the ordinary means of His Word.

Episode Notes
Delight in God’s Word When Life Feels Busy or Dry
There are times when life feels crowded, noisy, and overwhelming. There are also times when we sit down with
an open Bible and feel cold, distracted, or dull. Many Christians assume that in those moments God must be far
away, or that delight in Scripture is out of reach. Yet Scripture tells us something very different. Psalm 1 describes the blessed man as one who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. Psalm 119 celebrates God’s Word as that which revives the soul, gives wisdom, and satisfies the weary heart. Delight in Scripture is not reserved for a few especially disciplined or emotional believers. It is the ordinary pattern of those who belong to Christ and keep returning to His Word.
1. Prioritize Scripture with Purpose and Simplicity
Delight grows from regular, intentional time in the Word. You do not need hours every day; you need faithfulness with the means that God has provided. Even brief, focused time in Scripture is better than days of neglect. Start small and realistic: five minutes in a psalm, a proverb, or a passage from the Gospels. Choose a time you can guard and aim for consistency more than volume. Building simple rhythms such as reading at the same time each morning or before bed helps train your heart to expect to meet the Lord in His Word. Over time, those small habits begin to shape your desires and deepen your delight.
2. Ask the Lord to Stir Your Affection
Delight in Scripture is something God gives. Psalm 119:18 prays, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things
out of your law.” Before you read, take a moment to pray. Confess distractions, dryness, or indifference. Ask the Lord to renew your joy in Him and to give you a heart that loves His Word. When we come to Scripture prayerfully, we are not treating our Bible reading as a cold duty, but as a conversation with the living God. He delights to answer the prayer for understanding, obedience, and joy in His truth.
3. Meditate and Apply, Do Not Rush
Psalm 1 speaks of meditating on God’s law day and night. Meditation is not about speed; it is about savoring. Rather than racing through an entire chapter and forgetting it by lunch, slow down. Linger over a verse or phrase. Ask, “What does this teach me about God? What does it expose in my heart? How should this shape my thoughts, choices, and relationships today?” Take one verse from your reading and carry it with you through the day. Write it down, memorize it, or set it as a reminder on your phone. Let the Word dwell in you richly as you go about your responsibilities.
4. Remember That Scripture Nourishes Your Soul
We do not delight in the Word because life is ideal, but because our souls need it especially in difficult or dry
seasons. God has ordained His Word as the primary means by which He feeds, corrects, comforts, and strengthens His people. When your heart feels weak, when your emotions feel flat, or when your schedule is full, that is not a
reason to move away from Scripture. It is a reason to lean in. Feelings often follow faithfulness. As you keep showing up to hear from God in His Word, He uses that steady drip of truth to renew your mind and revive your heart. The Lord meets His people in His Word, even in weakness.
5. Build Simple, Daily Rhythms of Delight
The goal is not to create an impressive reading plan, but to build simple, sustainable rhythms of life in the Word. Prioritize Scripture, pray for understanding and affection, meditate and apply what you read, and keep returning to God’s promises even when you feel dry. Over time, you will see that delight in Scripture grows not because of your strength, but because of God’s faithfulness. His Word is living and active and able to revive weary hearts.
