The Holy Spirit’s Role in Understanding Scripture
·
Dave Jenkins
God has graciously given us His Word, but without His Spirit, we could not truly understand or apply it.
The Bible is not just another book, it is the living and active Word of God
(Hebrews 4:12). Because of this, we need the Spirit of God to illumine our minds and
hearts so we may grasp its truth.
Question: What role does the Holy Spirit play in understanding Scripture?
Illumination by the Spirit
The Holy Spirit’s role is not to give new revelation, since that work ended with the completion of the canon of Scripture.
Instead, the Spirit provides illumination. He opens our eyes, convicts our hearts, and enables us to embrace the truth of God’s Word.
“The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him,
and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”1 Corinthians 2:14
The Spirit and the Word
Jesus promised that the Spirit of truth would guide His people into all the truth
(John 16:13). The Spirit does not act apart from the Word, He works in perfect harmony with it.
He brings Scripture to mind, applies it to our lives, and helps us walk in obedience.
Why It Matters
Without the Spirit, we may read the Bible as mere information. With the Spirit, we see it as transformation.
The Spirit takes the written Word and presses it into our hearts so that it changes the way we think, feel, and live.
This truth keeps us from pride, reminding us that understanding Scripture is not about human cleverness,
it is about God’s gracious work in us.
Application
As you open your Bible, begin with prayer. Ask the Spirit to give you understanding, to open your heart to correction,
and to help you apply God’s Word. Depend on Him daily, for He is the One who makes the Scriptures come alive in your life.
Conclusion: With the Spirit’s help, we do not just read the Bible, we are changed by it.
