What is cessationism?

Cessationism is the belief that certain miraculous sign gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as prophecy, tongues, and healing, ceased with the completion of Scripture and the foundation of the early church. The Spirit still works powerfully today, but always through the sufficient Word of God.

Does the Holy Spirit still give new revelation outside of Scripture?

No. While some teach that God continues to give extra-biblical revelation, Scripture teaches that the canon is closed and complete. The Holy Spirit leads and guides believers today through the inspired Word of God, not through new prophecy or fallible impressions.

What is hyper-cessationism?

Hyper-cessationism is a label sometimes used to mischaracterize biblical cessationists as denying the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. In reality, faithful cessationists affirm that the Holy Spirit is constantly active in convicting, regenerating, sanctifying, and guiding believers through the Word of God.

Does cessationism mean the Holy Spirit no longer works?

No. Cessationism does not mean the Holy Spirit has stopped working. It simply means that the miraculous sign gifts given in the early church—such as prophecy, tongues, and healing—were temporary and have ceased. The Spirit still works mightily today through the sufficient Scripture, bringing order, growth, and holiness in the church.

How should Christians expect the Holy Spirit to work today?

Christians should expect the Holy Spirit to work through the ordinary means of grace: the preaching and reading of Scripture, prayer, worship, fellowship, the Lord’s Supper, and baptism. The Spirit’s work is always orderly, bringing God’s people into holiness, conviction of sin, and deeper love for Christ.

Born and reared in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Justin earned his undergraduate at Mississippi State University (1995) and then a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology (2000, 2002) from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Justin met his bride, Kathy, at an evangelism conference near Los Angeles, California, in 2009. They were married in August of 2010. From 2014 until 2019, they lived in Sandpoint, Idaho, and were members of Kootenai Community Church.
