God Is Faithful in the Fire

One of the greatest fears people experience in suffering is the feeling that they are alone. Trials can narrow our vision until all we can see is the pain directly in front of us. Yet the Word of God continually directs the eyes of believers away from their circumstances and toward the character and promises of the Lord.Isaiah 43:2 does not promise that God’s people will never pass through deep waters or walk through fire. The promise is that the Lord will be with them when they do. The fire is real, but so is the presence of God.God is not watching the suffering of His people from a distance. He sees them. He knows them. He cares for them. On account of the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, the Christian belongs to God and rests securely in His love and care.

Suffering Is Not Wasted

The purposes of God in suffering are not always immediately clear. Christians may not understand why a particular trial has entered their lives or how the Lord intends to use it. Scripture nevertheless teaches that suffering is never meaningless in the hands of a sovereign and faithful God.The Lord uses trials to refine His people, strengthen their faith, expose misplaced dependence, and teach them to trust Him more deeply. None of this makes suffering easy. It does mean, however, that suffering is never wasted.Our circumstances may change quickly, but the character of God does not. His faithfulness is not dependent upon how we feel, what we can see, or whether we presently understand what He is doing. He remains faithful because faithfulness belongs to who He is.

Through His suffering came the redemption of His people.The cross reminds Christians that suffering is never outside the sovereign plan of God. What appeared to be the darkest moment in history became the means through which God accomplished salvation for His people.For the Christian walking through a trial today, this provides a firm place to stand. You may not know why the fire has come. You may not know how long it will last. You may not yet see what God is accomplishing through it. But you can know the character of the One who walks with you through it.
