Cultivating a Heart of Thanksgiving
By Dave Jenkins | Contending for the Word Q&A
Remember God’s grace, trust His providence, and let thanksgiving shape everyday faithfulness.
We can say thank you, pray before meals, and sing about God’s greatness while allowing our hearts to become dominated by complaining, comparison, or discontentment. Biblical thanksgiving goes deeper than our words. It flows from a heart transformed by God’s grace.
In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins draws from Colossians 3:12–17 to consider how gratitude grows within a life increasingly shaped by Christ and His Word. A thankful heart remembers God’s faithfulness, trusts His providence, recognizes His ordinary mercies, and responds to His gifts with humility and praise.

A Life Shaped by Christ and His Word
Main Scripture: Colossians 3:12–17
Paul connects thankfulness with the life of God’s people: compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, and love. As the peace of Christ rules in our hearts and the Word of Christ dwells richly among us, thanksgiving increasingly characterizes our lives.
Christian gratitude begins with the gospel. Christ bore our sins, suffered in our place, and rose from the dead. Through faith in Him, we receive forgiveness, reconciliation, adoption, and eternal life. Remembering His grace teaches us to receive God’s gifts with humility rather than entitlement.

Five Ways to Cultivate a Heart of Thanksgiving
- Remember God’s grace. Receive His gifts with humility and praise, remembering that salvation is His gracious gift in Christ.
- Remember God’s faithfulness. Regularly rehearse what He has done, especially what He accomplished through Jesus Christ.
- Trust God’s providence. Rest in His sovereignty, wisdom, and goodness even when you do not understand your circumstances.
- Notice ordinary mercies. Recognize His kindness in daily provision, Scripture, fellowship, encouragement, and opportunities to hear the gospel.
- Let gratitude shape how you treat others. Respond to God’s grace with a growing willingness to forgive, give, and serve.
Give Thanks for Jesus Christ
Thanksgiving can come through tears. We do not need to understand every providence before we can trust the God who governs our lives. We look back and remember His faithfulness, recognize His provision today, and look ahead with confidence in His promises.
Above all, we look to Jesus Christ. In Him, our greatest treasure can never be taken from us. Remember God’s goodness, trust His providence, receive His gifts with humility, and give thanks for Christ.
