How Does Christ Deliver Us?
Deception, fear, and spiritual bondage cannot ultimately be overcome through positive thinking, greater self-confidence, religious activity, or human effort. True freedom is found only in Jesus Christ and the saving message of the gospel.
To understand why we need Christ, we first have to understand the problem of sin. Humanity was created to enjoy fellowship with God, but sin brought separation between mankind and our Creator. Scripture teaches that every person has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
This is why simply hearing that “Jesus loves you” or even that “Jesus died for your sins” without understanding the biblical doctrine of sin can leave the gospel incomplete in a person’s mind. We must first recognize that we are sinners who have violated God’s commands and cannot reconcile ourselves to Him.
The Sinless Savior We Need
Jesus Christ came into the world and lived the perfectly righteous life that none of us could live. He alone was without sin and therefore uniquely qualified to offer Himself as the spotless sacrifice for sinners.
On the cross, Jesus bore the judgment deserved by sinners. He physically died, was buried, and on the third day bodily rose from the dead. His resurrection was not merely spiritual or symbolic. His disciples saw Him, spoke with Him, touched Him, and ate with Him.
Christ later ascended to the right hand of the Father, where He reigns today, and Scripture teaches that He will return to judge the living and the dead.
Reconciled to God Through Christ
The gospel confronts the popular idea that we can earn eternal life simply by being “good people.” Scripture teaches that all of us have broken God’s law. Even sins we might consider small reveal our guilt before a holy God.
Our hope, therefore, cannot rest in our own goodness. Our hope rests entirely in Jesus Christ.
When sinners recognize their guilt before God, turn from sin, and place their trust in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, they are forgiven and reconciled to God.
Colossians 1:13–14 declares:
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
The Holy Spirit and the Christian Life
Those who belong to Christ are also given the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Christian life is not merely an attempt to become more moral through human determination. The Holy Spirit actively works in believers, sanctifying them and conforming them increasingly to the character of Christ.
Galatians 5 describes the fruit produced by the Spirit, including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
This is one of the ways Christ delivers His people from bondage. He rescues us from the empty pursuit of living in our own strength, depending entirely upon ourselves, and attempting to function as our own authority.
Jesus said in John 8:36:
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Read it slowly and prayerfully. Ask God to help you understand who Jesus is, why you need Him, and what He accomplished through His life, death, and resurrection.
Every one of us needs Jesus Christ. True freedom from sin, deception, fear, and spiritual bondage is found not in ourselves but in Him.
