Delighting in God’s Word through Biblical Meditation
📅 Contending for the Word Q&A – October 14, 2025
Question: What is biblical meditation, and how do I do it?
Introduction
Welcome back to Contending for the Word. Today we’re considering the question: What is biblical meditation, and how do I do it?
In our culture, meditation is often associated with emptying the mind, detaching from reality, or focusing inward. But biblical meditation is completely different. It is about filling your mind with God’s truth so that His Word shapes your heart and transforms your life.
What Biblical Meditation Is
Biblical meditation is the intentional focus of our thoughts on God’s Word. Psalm 1:2 describes the blessed person as one whose “delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
This practice is not passive or mystical. It is an active, thoughtful engagement with Scripture—turning our attention repeatedly to what God has said and allowing His Word to dwell richly in us.
How to Practice Biblical Meditation
- Read Slowly: Take a passage of Scripture and read it carefully, without rushing.
- Reflect Deeply: Ask, What does this teach me about God, about Christ, and about myself?
- Repeat Often: Go over the words multiple times, letting them take root in your heart.
- Pray Through the Text: Turn Scripture into prayer—thank God, confess sin, or ask for grace to obey.
- Apply Personally: Consider how this truth should change your thoughts, desires, and actions today.
Each of these steps helps you move from simply reading the Bible to truly meditating on it.
The Result of Biblical Meditation
Meditation leads to transformation. Joshua 1:8 reminds us, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
When we meditate on Scripture, we connect the truth of God’s Word with the realities of everyday life. It reshapes how we think, speak, and act.
Conclusion
So, what is biblical meditation? It is actively focusing your mind on God’s Word so that it fills your heart, fuels your prayers, and transforms your life.
You do not need special techniques or mystical experiences—just an open Bible, an attentive heart, and the help of the Holy Spirit. As you delight in God’s Word, you will find your mind renewed and your life increasingly conformed to the image of Christ.
