Biblical Courage When Faithfulness Becomes Costly

By Dave Jenkins | Contending for the WordBiblical courage means remaining faithful to Christ when obedience becomes costly. In this episode of Contending for the Word, Dave Jenkins draws lessons from the Protestant Reformation to explain how Scripture shapes our convictions, governs our consciences, and equips us to stand firm with humility and love.

Biblical Courage Begins with Scripture

Admiring the courage of Christians in previous generations is easier than standing firm when faithfulness costs us something. Approval, friendships, opportunities, and comfort can begin to influence what we are willing to believe, say, and do.Christian courage begins with submission to God’s Word. Acts 5:29 establishes our highest allegiance: obedience to God. Yet our consciences also need instruction and correction. As 2 Timothy 3:16–17 teaches, Scripture equips God’s people through teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.A conscience governed by Scripture must remain teachable. Sometimes faithfulness requires standing our ground. Sometimes it requires admitting that we were wrong. Both require courage.

Trusting God More Than We Fear People

Proverbs 29:25 warns that the fear of man lays a snare. When human approval governs our decisions, obedience becomes dependent on how others might respond.Trusting the Lord frees us to pursue faithfulness while entrusting the outcome to Him. God does not promise that obedience will preserve every friendship or opportunity. He calls us to trust His character and obey His Word, even when doing so brings painful consequences.

Standing Firm with Gentleness and Discernment

Biblical conviction shapes both what we defend and how we speak. In 2 Timothy 2:24–25, Paul calls the Lord’s servant to teach patiently and correct opponents with gentleness. Humility and kindness belong within Christian courage.Discernment also recognizes the difference between essential gospel truths, serious disagreements among Christians, and personal preferences. Romans 14 helps believers approach matters of conscience without treating one another as enemies. We need wisdom to recognize when public correction, a private conversation, patient listening, or silence is appropriate.

Practicing Courage in Everyday Life

Faithfulness develops through ordinary obedience: a pastor handles Scripture honestly, parents teach their children God’s Word, a Christian refuses a dishonest advantage, and a believer confesses sin rather than defending it.Small decisions form habits. By God’s grace, we learn courage as we resist temptation, receive correction, speak truth in love, and remain committed to the local church. Our labor in the Lord is never wasted, even when no one else notices.

Looking to Jesus for Lasting Confidence

Church history offers examples of faithfulness, but Christ alone gives salvation. Hebrews 12:1–3 directs our attention to Jesus, who endured the cross and calls His people to persevere. At the cross, Christ bore God’s wrath against the sins of His people. He rose from the grave, securing their hope. Our confidence rests in His finished work and resurrection. Because we belong to Him, we can face rejection, repent of our failures, and continue obeying when faithfulness becomes costly.
