Living According to God’s Word: Finding Life, Strength, and Hope in Psalm 119

By David Schrock

This article is part of our Risen and Revealed: Scripture, the Cross, and the Resurrection series, exploring how all of Scripture points to Christ and calls us to live in light of His finished work.

Introduction: A Word-Centered Life

Psalm 119 is an extended meditation on the truth, beauty, and goodness of God’s Word. In twenty-two stanzas, it leads the reader to consider all the ways in which God’s Word intersects with every part of life. There are dozens of themes to consider, but one that stands out is the way the Word mediates and regulates our relationship with God.

While systematic theology often speaks of Scripture in categories such as inspiration, authority, sufficiency, clarity, and inerrancy, Psalm 119 speaks of the Word in deeply lived and devotional terms. It commends us to pick up and read because of what the Word has promised and produced in the life of the Psalmist. Psalm 119 is devotional theology of the highest order, and for those struggling to get into the Word of God, its praise for God’s Word may be the very thing a tired and doubting soul needs to return again to Scripture.

Psalm 119 brings us into the lived experience of God’s Word—how it gives life, sustains faith, strengthens the weary, and draws us near to God.

Living “According to Your Word”

1. The Word Gives Life and Strength

At least fourteen times in Psalm 119, the Psalmist develops the idea of life “according to” God’s Word, promise, rules, justice, or steadfast love. Most explicitly, he pleads for grace and help on the basis of God’s Word:

  • “Give me life according to your word” (vv. 25, 107)
  • “Strengthen me according to your word” (v. 28)
  • “Give me understanding according to your word” (v. 169)
  • “Deliver me according to your word” (v. 170)

These requests reveal that the blessings the Psalmist seeks come by way of God’s revealed Word. And they rise out of real weakness and affliction. He does not cry out from a place of self-sufficiency, but from need.

These requests ultimately point us to Christ, the living Word, who gives life through His death and resurrection.

2. The Word Grounds Our Trust in God

God not only gives life according to His Word, but He also acts toward His people in covenant faithfulness according to what He has spoken. Psalm 119:65 says, “You have dealt well with your servant, O LORD, according to your word.” God’s Word is not empty speech. He keeps His promises. Not one of His words fails.

Because God is faithful to His Word, the Psalmist prays with confidence. He asks God to comfort him according to His promise (v. 76) and to keep his steps steady according to His promise (v. 133). This is not presumption; it is covenant faith.

God’s faithfulness to His Word is most clearly seen in the cross and resurrection of Christ, where every promise of redemption finds its Yes and Amen in Him.

3. The Word Directs Our Obedience

God’s Word not only comforts and sustains; it also commands. The Lord’s revelation includes commandments, rules, and laws that govern the life of His people. The Psalmist asks in verse 9, “How can a young man keep his way pure?” and immediately answers, “By guarding it according to your word.”

Likewise, verse 156 speaks of finding life according to God’s rules. The believer who abides with the Lord will seek to obey Him according to His Word.

Holiness is not rooted in self-effort but in a life shaped by the Word of God.

4. The Word Marks the Difference Between the Godly and the World

This Word-centeredness is what marks out the difference between the godly and the godless. Verse 85 says, “The insolent have dug pitfalls for me; they do not live according to your law.” The wicked live according to their desires, feelings, and rebellion. The righteous live according to God’s Word.

Even in the face of suffering, believers continue to abide in the Word of God. This contrast is not merely behavioral—it reveals who belongs to God.

As the world lives according to its fickle passions, the believer is called to live, move, and have his being according to the Word of God.

Psalm 119 and the Heart That Needs Renewal

Why read Psalm 119? Because when our hearts grow cold, distracted, or spiritually weary, Psalm 119 leads us back to life in God’s Word. It is one of the best places in all of Scripture to recover a heart for the Lord through His Word.

It teaches us that God promises life and strength according to His Word. It reminds us that without His Word, we remain ensnared by sin, suffering its deadly effects in ourselves and in others. But through His Word, God revives, teaches, corrects, comforts, and restores His people.

When our hearts grow dull, Psalm 119 calls us back—not to mere duty, but to life in God’s Word.

A Christ-Centered Conclusion

Psalm 119 ultimately points us to Christ.

Jesus is the Word made flesh. He perfectly lived according to the Word, fulfilled the law, and secured life for His people through His death and resurrection.

The life the Psalmist longed for—“according to your Word”—is found fully in Him.

Because Christ has risen, we do not merely read the Word—we are brought to life by it.

Final Exhortation

When you feel weary, distracted, or spiritually dry, return to the Word.

Not as a burden, but as the place where God gives life, strengthens faith, and restores the soul.
