In the beloved Christmas hymn Hark the Herald Angels Sing, the lyric “God and sinner reconciled” declares the gospel in just four words. It proclaims that humanity was separated from God by sin, unable to restore that relationship. Yet God Himself acted in mercy by sending His Son to take the punishment that we all deserve, for we have all sinned before our holy God.
Yes, God is love, and He is also holy and just. The angels’ announcement of peace in Luke 2:14 proclaims true peace with God: reconciliation that occurred when hostility was removed through Christ’s atoning death, so sinners could be forgiven and brought near without God compromising His holiness. As we read in Luke 2:14 and 2 Corinthians 5:18–19, this peace is God’s gracious work.
The hymn wisely uses the singular word “sinner” to make the point personal and precise. Reconciliation was made available through Christ to each sinner who repents and believes. As Romans 5:1 declares, “Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
May we keep our hearts turned away from sin and toward Jesus, the only One who offers forgiveness and reconciliation with our heavenly Father. In this Christmas season and beyond, may we rest in the finished work of
Christ, rejoicing that in Him, God and sinner are truly reconciled.

Doreen volunteers in discipling women who’ve been saved out of New Age in a private Facebook group. Doreen was a speaker at the Answers in Genesis 2025 women’s conference at the Ark Encounter.
