Episode Notes

All right everybody, welcome back to the contending for the word Q&A podcast. I’m Dave Jenkins and today we’re addressing a vital question for ongoing spiritual growth. The question is why is daily repentance vital for the Christian life? Repentance, dear Christian friend, is not a one time event at conversion. It is a daily posture of the Christian heart. As long as we battle indwelling or remaining sin, we need daily repentance before God.

Repentance is not just is not, I mean a mark of failure. It is the evidence of the grace of God at work in our life. Humility before God and a life shaped by the gospel of Christ. Repentance means turning from sin and turning to God in faith and obedience. Scripture calls believers to examine their hearts, confess sin, and walk in holiness.

Like in 1 John 1:9, and Psalm 139:23–24, daily repentance keeps our conscience tender, our hearts humble, and our fellowship with God unhindered. A mature Christian is not somebody who sins less visibly, but somebody who repents more quickly, sincerely, and joyfully because they treasure Christ above sin. Repentance is not about condemnation. It’s about restoration and renewal and growth.

So the question is why is daily repentance vital for the Christian life? Well, first, because we will still battle indwelling sin. Romans 7:21–24—even mature believers struggle with sin. Daily repentance acknowledges our ongoing need for God’s grace and power.

Second, because repentance restores fellowship with God. 1 John 1:9—God forgives and cleanses his people. When we confess our sin, repentance clears the way for renewed joy, peace, and communion with Christ.

Third, because repentance produces humility and spiritual growth. James 4:6–10—God gives grace to the humble. Pride resists repentance. Humility embraces repentance. Repentance shapes Christlike character and deepens discipleship.

Fourth, because repentance guards us from hardness of heart. Hebrews 3:13—sin deceives and hardens. Daily repentance keeps us sensitive to sin, vigilant against temptation, and anchored in the truth of God’s Word.

So here’s why this matters. First, examine your heart regularly in light of the Word of God, confessing quickly and sincerely. Keep short accounts with the Lord. Turn from sin to Christ in faith and obedience. Walk in humility, remembering grace abounds in Christ alone, and rejoice that repentance leads to restoration, not to shame. The gospel frees us to repent, not to hide.

Repentance is vital because it keeps our hearts soft, our walk humble, and our fellowship with Christ sweet. Repentance is not a burden. It is a gift of grace that brings freedom, renewal, and joy. The Christian life is a life continually turning from sin and turning to the Savior King, who loves us and transforms us.

This is why John Calvin said that the Christian life is one of repentance. And why Martin Luther said that the Christian life is one of ongoing repentance. See, we have a great need of Christ and a great Christ for our need.

So our need to repent, our need to continue to grow is such that we need to continue to do it. Because 2 Peter 3:18 says, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” That’s why we need to repent. Why we need to continue to grow, to become like Christ, every day of our lives.

And God is doing it in our lives every single day. He’s using the ordinary events, the situations in our private lives, in our home life, in our church life and our work life and our public life and all of life to grow and to change us, to be more like Christ.

If today’s episode encouraged you to walk in joyful repentance, please share it with somebody who may need this encouragement, reminder, or instruction from our biblical resources and encouragement. And remember, the growing Christian is the repenting Christian—daily, gladly, and by the grace of God—because we’re united to Christ by faith in his name, in communion with Christ, and indwelt by his Spirit.

May God bless you and keep you until tomorrow. Have a great rest of your day.
