Did Jesus claim to be God?

Yes. Jesus explicitly claimed deity in passages such as John 8:58, John 10:30, and John 14:9. The religious leaders understood this and attempted to stone Him for blasphemy.

Why does the deity of Christ matter?

The deity of Christ is essential because only God can save. If Jesus were merely a created being, His death would not be sufficient to pay for sin or secure salvation.

Has the deity of Christ been disputed throughout history?

Yes. From Arianism in the early church to modern skepticism and theological compromise, the identity of Jesus has always been contested. Scripture and the historic church affirm He is truly God and truly man.
