Why Romans Matters Now: The Gospel That Changes Everything
The book of Romans gives Christians the gospel clarity they desperately need in a confused age. Romans reveals who God is, exposes the depth of human sin, declares the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ, and explains how sinners are justified by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.Romans is not merely a collection of theological ideas. The Gospel of God
Romans begins with the gospel. The Apostle Paul describes himself as a servant of Christ Jesus who was called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.The gospel is not good advice or a religious improvement plan. It is the good news of what God has accomplished through the life, death, resurrection, and reign of Jesus Christ. The gospel comes from God, centers on the Son of God, and is revealed in the Word of God.The Need of Every Sinner
Romans does not flatter humanity. It teaches that Jews and Gentiles, religious and irreligious people, and moral and immoral people are all guilty before a holy God.All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Religious activity, good intentions, cultural approval, moral comparison, and human effort cannot save. Romans closes every mouth so that sinners will look to Jesus Christ alone for salvation.The Righteousness of God in Christ
Romans does not leave sinners condemned without hope. It declares that the righteousness of God is received through faith in Jesus Christ.Sinners are justified freely by God’s grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God remains just while also being the justifier of everyone who has faith in Christ.Justification is God’s gracious act, not our achievement. Christians are not accepted by God because they are righteous in themselves. The gospel that saves sinners also changes sinners. Those who are united to Christ are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.The Christian life is not self-powered moral improvement. It is life in union with Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans teaches believers about sanctification, adoption, the struggle against sin, life in the Spirit, and the assurance that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.The grace of God does not teach Christians to excuse, minimize, or remain apathetic about sin. Grace enables believers to put sin to death through the Spirit and the means God has provided.The Sovereign Mercy of God
Romans leads Christians into the deep truths of God’s sovereign mercy, His promises, His purposes, election, Israel, the Gentiles, unbelief, and the faithfulness of God.These truths are not given to encourage pride or empty speculation. They are given to produce humility, trust, submission, and worship.“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!”Romans 11:33Christians do not come to Romans to stand above the text. They come to sit under the authority of the Word of God.
The Fruit of the Gospel in the Church
Romans teaches that gospel doctrine produces gospel-shaped living. Because of the mercies of God, Christians are called to present their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God.The gospel shapes Christian worship, relationships, service, speech, priorities, discernment, conscience, liberty, unity, hospitality, forgiveness, and mission. It creates a people who live together under the lordship of Jesus Christ.Why Romans Matters Today
Christians need Romans because they need the gospel. They need to see the holiness of God, the depth of human sin, the riches of divine grace, the glory of Jesus Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit, the sovereign mercy of God, and the life of the gospel in the church.Romans is not merely a book to master. Romans is God’s Word, and God’s Word is meant to master us.As we begin this journey through Romans, we should come humbly, prayerfully, and expectantly. We should come ready to listen, learn, repent, believe, obey, worship, and see Jesus Christ more clearly.Romans is the gospel that changes everything.
