Why False Teaching Keeps Returning
By Dave Jenkins | Contending for the Word Q&A
False teaching never truly disappears. Names change, movements develop, and methods evolve, but familiar errors continue to resurface. Christians need biblical discernment to recognize these errors and confidence in Christ to remain faithful without becoming fearful.
In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins draws from 2 Peter 2:1 and 1 John 4:1 to explain why false teaching keeps returning and how God equips His people to stand firm.

Why Old Errors Keep Returning
Satan continues to oppose God’s truth by undermining confidence in what God has said. At the same time, sinful hearts are drawn toward messages that promise fulfillment without repentance, spirituality without submission, and blessing without holiness.
Church history helps Christians recognize familiar patterns. Teachings that redefine Jesus, deny essential doctrines, or promise secret spiritual knowledge often repeat errors the church has confronted before.
How God Equips His People
Christ has not left His church defenseless. He has given His people His Word, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, faithful pastors and teachers, and fellowship in the local church.
As believers grow in biblical knowledge and spiritual maturity, they become better equipped to recognize error and remain faithful to Christ.
Four Practical Responses
- Recognize that spiritual deception has appeared throughout church history.
- Guard your heart by remaining rooted in God’s Word.
- Study church history to recognize recurring errors.
- Trust Christ to preserve His church in the truth.
Stand Firm in Christ’s Faithfulness
False teaching will continue to arise until Christ returns, but God’s faithfulness will never fail. The Lord who sustained His church through previous generations continues to preserve His people today.
Keep growing in the knowledge of Scripture, love the truth, and faithfully contend for the faith.
