The Lord is using Lecrae’s music ministry to impact a generation. His music has also spawned a greater appreciation and respect for Gospel rap among Christians. Before I listened to Lecrae, I never enjoyed listening to rap. In fact, when my wife first saw me listening to Lecrae she wondered who that was. Then I told her and she was surprised since one of her sisters listened to him. That was many years ago now and I’m still enjoying listening to Lecrae’s music. When I heard of Lecrae’s first book Unashamed was coming out, I knew I needed to read it to learn more about his life and ministry.
Lecrae’s book is an honest exploration into a variety of issues from his own life that touch on the daily experiences Christians or non-Christians face each and every day such as father abandonment, abortion, and peer pressure. What impressed me as I read this excellent book was the honesty of Lecrae. Not only does Lecrae know how to tell a good story he tells the old, old story of the Gospel very well.
Lecrae’s music is marked by sound theology mixed with a good beat. His book is marked by raw transparency. As I read this book, I kept thinking again, and again how transparent the author is and how hard it must have been to share some of the things he does in the book. Yet, one thing I know about Lecrae from listening to his music—he is real. He will tell you how it is in love. He will focus on Christ and make much of Him. This is why I enjoy Lecrae’s music. Lecrae isn’t afraid to be who he is in Christ and tell others about Jesus.
Whether you are a new or seasoned Christian there is much readers can learn from Lecrae’s story. We discover from Lecrae’s story that in our own Christian lives we are not to stay stagnant or be apathetic about our sin. Instead, we need to continue to repent and grow in Christ. We also learn the importance of community in the Christian life, the place of godly mentors, and our great need for one another.
If you aren’t familiar already with Lecrae’s ministry, I encourage you to pick up his new book Unashamed and learn more about a man (among many) who the Lord is using to impact a generation for the glory of His name.
