Science and Scientism Are Not the Same

SCIENTISM,” and a small banner at the top that says “CONTENDING FOR THE WORD Q&A.” On the right, an antique brass microscope sits under warm golden light, surrounded by measurement lines, scientific diagrams, and faded formulas, visually emphasizing the limits of science and the distinction between science and scientism.

Science is often presented as the ultimate authority in modern culture. If something is described as scientific, it is assumed to be true. If something cannot be measured, tested, or observed, it is often dismissed. But science and scientism are not the same.Science is a valuable tool for studying and understanding the natural world. Scientism goes beyond scientific investigation by claiming that science is the only reliable source of truth and knowledge. This claim is not scientific. It is a philosophical belief that cannot itself be proven through scientific testing. In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins explains the difference between science and scientism, the proper limits of scientific inquiry, and why Christians must evaluate every claim according to the truth of God’s Word.

Science and Scientism Are Not the Same

Science, rightly understood, is the study of the natural world through observation, testing, and investigation. It can help us understand how God’s creation works. A biblical worldview supports scientific study because the world was created by an orderly, rational, and sovereign God.Scientism, however, claims that only what can be scientifically measured or observed can be accepted as true. This is not a scientific conclusion. It is a philosophical claim about the nature of truth and knowledge.
“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”Colossians 2:8

The Limits of Science

Science can answer many important questions about how the natural world operates, but it cannot answer humanity’s ultimate questions. Scientific investigation cannot determine why we exist, what gives life meaning, or what is objectively right and wrong. These are questions of truth, morality, purpose, and ultimate reality. They require more than observation and experimentation. They require revelation from the God who created the world and made humanity in His image.God reveals truth through creation, Scripture, and ultimately through the Lord Jesus Christ. Science can help us understand creation, but it cannot replace God’s revelation or serve as the final authority over every area of life.

How Christians Should Think About Science

  • Recognize science as a valuable tool, not the ultimate authority.
  • Distinguish scientific investigation from philosophical claims presented as science.
  • Evaluate every belief through the authoritative Word of God.
  • Remember that science cannot determine ultimate morality, meaning, or purpose.
  • Trust that all truth ultimately comes from God.
When science is placed in its proper role, it can be helpful and beneficial. When it is elevated beyond its limits and treated as the source of all truth, it becomes scientism.Christians do not need to reject genuine scientific study. They must reject the belief that science can replace God, Scripture, or divine revelation. Science helps us understand aspects of the created world, but only God defines ultimate truth.
