Reformation Truth for Today Begins with God’s Word
Jesus declares in John 17:17, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” The church receives truth from God and must faithfully teach what He has revealed. Cultural expectations, personal preferences, and spiritual experiences cannot determine which biblical teachings remain acceptable.Where Scripture speaks, Christians are called to believe, teach, and obey it. This includes what God reveals about Himself, salvation in Christ, human identity, marriage, holiness, and judgment.Standing for truth also requires love. Ephesians 4:15 calls Christians to speak the truth in love. Biblical conviction and genuine compassion belong together as we serve Christ and care for others.Worship Must Be Governed by Scripture
Jesus teaches in John 4:24 that those who worship God must worship in spirit and truth. The central question in worship is how God commands His people to approach Him.Our songs, preaching, and prayers communicate what we believe about God. They should faithfully reflect His Word and direct our attention to His character and works.Biblical worship engages our minds and affections. Joy, reverence, gratitude, sorrow over sin, and delight in God arise as we respond to His truth. Our emotions should respond to Scripture rather than replace it.God nourishes His people through His Word, prayer, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and fellowship with the saints. We should value ordinary biblical faithfulness rather than measuring worship by spectacle or emotional intensity.Every Human Authority Must Submit to God’s Word
Disagreements about truth and worship eventually raise a question of authority: who decides what the church should believe and practice?Second Timothy 3:16–17 teaches that Scripture is breathed out by God and equips His people through teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. God’s Word encourages us, exposes our errors, and directs us in faithful obedience.Pastors, churches, and individual Christians all need biblical correction. A church committed to Scripture must be willing to change its beliefs and practices wherever God’s Word reveals error.Christ rules His church through His Word. Every pastor, denomination, tradition, and personal experience must therefore be evaluated under Scripture’s final authority.Putting Reformation Truth for Today into Practice
The church must continually return to the Word of God. Our doctrine, worship, leadership, and daily lives must be shaped and corrected by what God has revealed. As you listen, consider these questions:- Does Scripture govern what your church teaches and practices?
- Are your expectations for worship shaped by God’s Word?
- Do you receive biblical correction with humility?
- Are you speaking the truth with conviction and love?
- Does your daily obedience reflect your stated commitment to biblical authority?
