Spiritual warfare is a topic that many Christians struggle to understand. It’s no surprise that this particular issue is so misunderstood in the Church today, since we live in a culture that promotes new age, occultism, and more. In certain quarters of the Church, a form of spiritual warfare exists that in my opinion that promotes the work of Satan and demons over the supremacy of Christ. It is for this and many other reasons, I was excited to read Fighting Satan Knowing His Weaknesses, strategies, and Defeat by Dr. Joel Beeke.
In this book which has four parts, the author explores in part one knowing the enemy: the personality and history of Satan. Here he looks at Satan in the Bible and in church history. In part two, the author considers knowing’s Satan’s weaknesses: fighting Satan offensively and defensively. In part three, the author helps readers understand Satan’s strategies and skill, and confronting four major strategies of Satan. In the final part of the book, the author considers the relevance of spiritual warfare on our lives as believers, church members, and citizens.
Over the years, I’ve read a lot on the topic of spiritual warfare. There are lots of good books and there are lots of bad books on this topic. Dr. Beeke walks his readers through what the Bible teaches about Satan, demons, Christ, and our battle against the world, the flesh, and the devil. He not only explains what the Bible teaches but helps us understand what other faithful and godly men have thought about spiritual warfare. Lastly, he explains how to battle spiritual warfare and the dangers of wrong views of spiritual warfare.
There is a lot more that could be said about this excellent book. Good books on spiritual warfare are needed today in a culture that is obsessed with the demonic. I highly recommend Fighting Satan Knowing His Weaknesses, Strategies, and Defeat. This book will help you to understand what the Bible teaches, what the church has taught on this topic, and how to engage in spiritual warfare in a way that honors God, and brings Him glory. This book would be excellent for pastors to get their parishioners, for Sunday school teachers and preachers to use on a series on spiritual warfare, for small groups, and for one-on-one discipleship. This excellent and deeply pastoral book deserves to be read by every Christian, as it will help them to understand what spiritual warfare is and to ready themselves to fight the good fight of faith by God’s grace.
I received this book for free from Reformation Heritage for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
