Vanity of Vanities
Ecclesiastes opens with the striking declaration:“Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” — Ecclesiastes 1:2The word translated vanity carries the idea of vapor, breath, or mist. It describes something temporary, fleeting, and impossible to grasp. Like smoke disappearing into the air, life moves quickly and cannot be controlled.Ecclesiastes is not teaching that life has no value. Rather, it exposes the inability of created things to provide the lasting meaning and satisfaction for which the human heart longs.
Life Under the Sun
One of the most important phrases in Ecclesiastes is under the sun. The Preacher repeatedly examines life from the perspective of our existence in a fallen world.When life is viewed only under the sun, it can seem repetitive, uncertain, and unsatisfying. Work cannot provide ultimate meaning. Pleasure cannot satisfy forever. Wealth cannot overcome death. Human wisdom cannot solve every mystery.Ecclesiastes forces us to face these realities honestly, and that honesty is ultimately a gift because it directs our attention away from temporary things and toward the eternal God.The Search for Meaning

Ecclesiastes and Jesus Christ
Ecclesiastes ultimately prepares us to see more clearly our need for Jesus Christ.Genesis 3 explains why the world is marked by suffering, frustration, and death. Romans 8:20–21 tells us that creation has been subjected to futility. Ecclesiastes describes what living in that fallen world feels like.But Jesus Christ entered this fallen world and accomplished what we could never accomplish. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection, He gives His people forgiveness, eternal life, lasting hope, and true purpose.Where Ecclesiastes exposes the problem, Christ provides the answer. In Christ, life is not meaningless. Our hope is secure, and our labor in the Lord is not in vain.Key Scriptures
