The Authority of Scripture Comes First

Christianity did not begin with our generation. Across the centuries, believers have defended the gospel, confronted error, served local churches, and passed biblical truth to those who came after them. Learning from their faithfulness and failures can expose our assumptions and strengthen our discernment.Yet church history is not infallible. Pastors, theologians, councils, creeds, and confessions must all be tested by God’s Word. Scripture alone is the church’s final, infallible authority for faith and practice.

Learning from Creeds and Confessions

Sola Scriptura does not mean refusing to learn from other Christians. Faithful creeds and confessions can help us understand and articulate biblical doctrine. Their authority depends on their faithfulness to Scripture, and their usefulness lies in directing us back to the Word of God.Historical awareness also helps us recognize that many contemporary errors have appeared before. As we learn how Christians addressed those errors biblically, we become better equipped to evaluate the teaching we encounter today.

Historically Grounded and Biblically Faithful

Read faithful Christians from previous generations with your Bible open. Let their teaching challenge your assumptions, but examine their conclusions by Scripture. Honor their faithfulness, acknowledge their failures, and remember that Jesus Christ remains the foundation of your confidence.Church history should deepen our humility and gratitude. Christ has preserved His church across generations, and His written Word must continue to govern what we believe and how we live.
