Biblical Discernment in a Digital World

Biblical Discernment

⏱️ Estimated Reading Time: 3 min read

False teaching can reach our phones in seconds. A compelling video, a confident speaker, or a large following can make a message seem trustworthy. Yet Christians must evaluate every spiritual claim by the Word of God.

In this Weekly Watch episode of Contending for the Word, Dave Jenkins explores biblical discernment in a digital world. Drawing on Scripture’s warnings about false teachers, he explains why believers need sound doctrine, patience, and the shepherding care of a faithful local church.

Listen or Watch

Test Online Teaching by Scripture

False teaching is not new. What has changed is how quickly it spreads. Jesus warned about false prophets, and the apostles called believers to watch carefully and test what they heard.

First Thessalonians 5:21 calls Christians to test everything and hold fast to what is good. That includes sermons, podcasts, social media posts, and claims of special revelation.

Popularity Does Not Establish Faithfulness

Followers, shares, production quality, and educational credentials cannot establish whether a teacher handles Scripture faithfully. Biblical discernment examines the teaching itself and considers the teacher’s accountability.

Dave offers practical questions to help listeners evaluate online teaching:

  • Does this teacher belong to a faithful local church?
  • Can this person receive correction?
  • Is Scripture taught in context?
  • Is Christ central to the message?
  • Does the teacher promote spiritual secrets or exclusive revelation?
  • Does the teaching encourage dependence upon Christ or upon the teacher?

Practice Patience Before Responding

Online content often invites an immediate reaction. Biblical wisdom calls us to slow down, examine claims, and consider whether our response will be truthful and edifying.

We do not need to offer an opinion on every controversy. We need to know God’s Word and apply it faithfully.

Stay Rooted in the Local Church

Faithful online resources can encourage believers, but they cannot replace the local church. Christians need pastors who know them, elders who shepherd them, and fellow believers who offer encouragement and correction.

Dave also shares how counsel from pastors and mature Christians helps him prepare discernment episodes. Growing in wisdom involves studying Scripture personally and receiving help from God’s people.

Key Scriptures
