Be Holy in All Your Conduct

Be Holy in All Your Conduct

1 Peter 1:14-16, “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” Since God, in his great mercy, has...

Setting Our Hope on Grace

Setting Our Hope on Grace

1 Peter 1:13, “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Each of us has a variety of things about which we must think on a regular basis. For...

Let My Soul Live and Praise You

Let My Soul Live and Praise You

Psalm 119:169-176, Let my cry come before you, O Lord; give me understanding according to your word! Let my plea come before you; deliver me according to your word. My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes. My tongue will sing of your word, for...

Like a Wineskin in the Smoke

Like a Wineskin in the Smoke

Psalm 119:81-88, “My soul longs for your salvation; I hope in your word. My eyes long for your promise; I ask, “When will you comfort me?” For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, yet I have not forgotten your statutes. How long must your servant endure? When...

The Path to Happiness

The Path to Happiness

Psalm 119:1-8, “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! You have commanded your precepts to be kept...

Do Not Imitate Evil but Imitate Good

Do Not Imitate Evil but Imitate Good

In the last blog post, we learned that John wrote his third letter to a man named Gaius who was his child in the faith and who was now the leader of a local church. In light of the testimony of some “brothers” who had been with Gaius and brought a good report of him...

Be Fellow-Workers for the Truth

Be Fellow-Workers for the Truth

As is the case with 2 John, 3 John is a short but meaningful letter. It’s designed to pack one punch, and it does so with a force that can guide us in our lives with Christ if we’ll have ears to hear and hearts to receive what he has to say. Although this letter has a...

Clinging to Christ in Truth and Love

Clinging to Christ in Truth and Love

The little letters we call 2 John and 3 John don’t get much respect or attention. In fact, in thirty years of listening to sermons, I’ve heard exactly one message from them both and the pastor who preached it took a line from 2 John and spoke of things John did not...

Testing the Spirits

Testing the Spirits

The heart of God is to welcome us into the fellowship of the Trinity, the very joy of God in God, by faith in his Son and the power of his Spirit. As John writes in 1 John 1:3-4, “that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have...

Fullness of Joy

Fullness of Joy

In the summer of 1986, I was a hopeless drug addict. I had been strung out since 1979 when I was only twelve-years-old, and I had reached the point where I wanted to commit suicide. Thanks be to God that I didn’t have the courage to follow through on that desire...

Marriage and the Glory of Christ

Marriage and the Glory of Christ

The Christian life is a life of worship. It’s a life focused on God and lived for the glory of God in Christ. Therefore, Paul tells us in Ephesians 5:18-21 not to be drunk with wine but rather to be filled with the Spirit who will teach us to speak in the words of...

Worship and the Call to Submission

Worship and the Call to Submission

Worship and the Call to Submission Ephesians 5:22-6:9 is one of the most beautiful and controversial portions of the New Testament. On the one hand, it paints a vivid and captivating picture of the love of Christ for his people. But on the other hand, it calls his...

Be Filled with the Spirit

Be Filled with the Spirit

“Be filled with the Spirit” (Eph 5:18). That’s a bit of an odd command, isn’t it? On the one hand, it is odd because it’s hard to understand how Paul can command us to manage the level of God we have within us! But on the other hand, it’s not odd at all because in the...
