Contending for the Word Q&A With Dave Jenkins
Faithful Christian service often happens where few people notice. Caring for an aging parent, preparing a meal, praying for others, and serving in a local church may receive little public recognition. Our Lord sees it all.In this episode of Contending for the Word Q&A, Dave Jenkins considers serving Christ without seeking recognition. Through Matthew 6:1–4, Colossians 3:23–24, and Mark 10:45, he explains how the gospel frees Christians to serve with humility, perseverance, and love.

In This Episode

  • Examining whether our service is motivated by God’s glory or human recognition.
  • Understanding the difference between receiving appreciation and depending on it.
  • Remembering that Christ sees the work others overlook.
  • Looking to Jesus as our Savior and supreme example of sacrificial service.
  • Resting in our identity in Christ as forgiven, justified, adopted, and loved.
  • Guarding against pride even when our service remains unnoticed.

Serving for God’s Glory

Jesus warns against practicing righteousness to be seen by others. His concern is our motive. In Matthew 5:16, He teaches His disciples to let their light shine so that others glorify their Father in heaven. Christian service directs attention to God and His goodness.Colossians 3:23–24 calls Christians to work heartily for the Lord. Hidden service matters because we are serving Christ. His knowledge of our faithfulness gives encouragement when appreciation is absent.

Serving Because We Belong to Christ

Jesus came to serve and give His life as a ransom for many. His sacrificial love shapes the service of His people. Those who belong to Him are already forgiven, justified, adopted, and loved by God. Our identity is secure in Christ. That security frees us to love people without making them an audience for our significance. We can receive a sincere thank you gratefully while continuing to serve when no thanks comes. We serve because we have received His grace.

Reflection Questions

  1. Would I continue serving if no one thanked me or someone else received the credit?
  2. How does belonging to Christ change the way I respond to being overlooked?
  3. Where can I serve my family, church, or neighbor faithfully this week?
