You Do Not Need a New Word from God

Equipping You in Grace with Dave Jenkins | Theology in a Confused World

God has spoken, and His Word is sufficient. Yet Christians can affirm the Bible’s authority while still searching for a new word, a sign, a dream, or an impression to guide their lives. In this episode of Equipping You in Grace, Dave Jenkins explains how Scripture equips God’s people for salvation and faithful obedience. Drawing from 2 Timothy 3:15–17, he considers biblical guidance, claims of private revelation, the Holy Spirit’s work through the Word, and the comfort of God’s promises in suffering.

God’s Word Equips His People

The sufficiency of Scripture does not mean the Bible answers every technical question or names the specific job, house, or opportunity a Christian should choose. It means God has given us everything necessary for salvation and faithful Christian belief and obedience.Scripture reveals God’s character, commands, promises, and saving work in Jesus Christ. It renews our minds and forms us into people who can apply biblical truth wisely in everyday life.

Making Decisions with Biblical Wisdom

Christians do not need to discover God’s secret will before obeying His revealed will. Where Scripture speaks clearly, we obey. Where a decision requires wisdom, we pray, examine our motives, consider our responsibilities, and seek counsel from mature believers. Our confidence rests in our sovereign Father. We can make responsible decisions and trust Him with the outcome without treating every circumstance or feeling as a hidden message.

Testing Claims of Private Revelation

Saying “God told me” is a serious claim. God speaks truthfully, and His Word carries divine authority. Our impressions and opinions remain fallible and must never be placed alongside Scripture or used to control others. The Holy Spirit helps believers understand, receive, and apply the truth He has already inspired. His work draws us deeper into God’s Word and points us to Jesus Christ.

Trusting God’s Promises When Life Hurts

Biblical sufficiency does not require Christians to pretend that grief and suffering are easy. Scripture gives us language for lament, assurance of God’s presence, and hope in Christ even when we do not understand His providence.God also calls His people to bear one another’s burdens. A hurting Christian may know God’s promises and still need someone to sit beside them, listen, pray, and help carry their sorrow.

Faithful Ministry Under God’s Word

Pastors are called to preach the Word and shepherd God’s people with patience and care. Their authority comes from faithfully communicating Scripture. Every pastor, teacher, theological book, and confession remains accountable to God’s written Word. Our greatest need is reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ. Scripture reveals the Savior who died for sinners and rose bodily from the grave. We need to understand, believe, and live by the gospel God has already given.
